"Enjoy the day!" the woman smiled and passed Clive his coffee. He scowled at her.

"I'm going to my father's funeral," he said. "I'll do my best."

The smile fell from the woman's face with an almost audible clatter. Clive dropped the money on the counter and walked off. Amy smiled at the woman and followed him.

"Why do you do that?" she asked as he sat himself down at the table by the window.

"What?" he asked, removing the plastic top from the coffee. Amy watched as he began pouring sugar into the large paper cup.

"Making people feel bad," she said.

"I get sick of listening to the robots," he said. "The corporate robotic statements: 'have a nice day', 'enjoy the day", whatever. It gets on my nerves." Clive stirred the sugar into the coffee in violent swirls of his hand.

"But you made the woman feel bad. For no good reason. Your dad is fine, why would you tell her you're going to his funeral?"
