The Healthcare System In My Country: A Double-Edged Sword

Health is wealth. The importance of good health cannot be overemphasized, nor can it be overlooked. You don’t know the value of what you have until you lose it. In our journey in life, we don’t know the importance of good health until it gets compromised. Good health is like a solid foundation upon which we live our lives. When our health is in perfect condition, we feel energized to carry out our daily activities. Good health goes beyond the confines of physical wellbeing, it also touches the mental and emotional aspects. In whatever we do, we should always pay maximum attention to our health. Take care of your body system by exercising, eating nutritious meals, and going for regular checkups.

One thing about developed countries is that they have a well-established healthcare system in place. They prize the well-being of the citizens. The government makes sure they provide the citizens with adequate medical facilities that are accessible to everyone. In developed countries, the well-being of citizens is the top priority of the government. Sadly, it is not this way in some other countries. Here in my country, a good healthcare system is only accessible to those who can afford it. So many people have lost their lives because they were unable to afford to pay the bills.

I don’t have many hospital-related experiences. I have actually never been admitted to the hospital. Well, I guess the only time I got admitted was when I was a kid. This is because my mum is a nurse. She is an experienced nurse who works in a federal hospital. So, whenever we (her kids) fall sick, she treats us at home. Our house is like a mini hospital where people from different places come for regular checkups. My mum is very popular in our neighborhood because she is everyone’s nurse.

Here in my country, the healthcare system is nothing to write home about. I didn’t know the value of my mom’s profession and experience until I left her abode to a different place. I gained admission to a state where the healthcare system is very poor.

MY EXPERIENCE

As I mentioned earlier, I don’t have many hospital-related experiences. However, I do have some experiences about my friends that I would love to share. Sometimes this year, my roommate fell very sick. It started as a slight headache. We thought the headache was a result of school stress, so we gave him paracetamol and made him rest. He rested for hours, but when he woke up, the headache worsened. And this time, his temperature also went high. He started experiencing symptoms of malaria -headache, fatigue, chills and fever.

Every semester, my mom gives me different medications and it makes me feel like a little doctor taking care of my health and that of my hostel mates. I always consult my mom through calls or any social media platform before I use any medication. Not only am I a little doctor when it comes to drugs, but I also take care of my friends’ minor injuries and wounds. My friend’s case was different because he told me that he does not like using drugs because they don’t work for him.

The symptoms got worse and we had no other options but to take it to the School’s clinic. He was really shivering and his body was weak. When we got to the clinic, they did not attend to us because he wasn’t with his student ID card. We begged them, but they didn’t listen. It was really disheartening to witness that. What if my roommate had lost his life right there? Why would you not attend to a sick patient just because he wasn’t with his hospital ID card? We had to rush back to the hospital to get the ID card, it wasn’t until then that they attended to him.

Last semester, one of my schoolmates had a brutal accident. His bike collided with a truck. He was really hurt and was bleeding. People rushed him to the school’s clinic, but the clinic didn’t have the right medical equipment to treat his wounds. They couldn’t even stop the bleeding. The nearest hospital was an hour away from the clinic. Sadly, he lost his life before they got to the hospital. It was a black day for the school. Why would a whole state not have adequate medical facilities? The health system in that state is very poor, you just have to stay safe!

The healthcare system in my country is not totally bad. It is poor, but not totally poor. There are big and good hospitals here in my country. However, some hospitals are accessible to only those who can afford it. The one time the healthcare of my country impressed me was when I followed one of my friends to a hospital. He sustained a terrible wound while riding his skating shoes. The nurses attended to him, treated his wounds well (this part really impressed me) and took good care of him. The hospital bill was very much affordable.
