Her head was filled with thoughts going in circles like a merry-go-round. She did not run one of the most successful Online News Portals without listening to her hunches. And this niggling feeling just wouldn't go away. Dad always said "A Stitch In Time Saves Nine" and she had to get to the bottom of this feeling.

She had heard her workmates whisper and hush when she walked in. Change topic rather awkwardly. Her friends had told her, some choosing their words oh so carefully, some blurting out whatever they had as ammo that she was over thinking it. They weren't convincing.

This man who had started the company with her, a friend for over 30 years, a lover for 2, a business partner for over 20. She was sure she knew him well enough, and he was definitely keeping a secret from her. She had even asked him in passing and he had laughed it off.

"Why would I keep a secret? You are being too paranoid."

He was so calm about it she felt stupid but there was this nagging thought. Could there be fire without a spark? Can a story be fabricated from absolutely nothing? From the moment she woke up to when she lay her head, a corner of her mind was dedicated to watch and listen to everything.

Right now, she sat there staring at his computer that she had hacked. She had to go through almost all his folders and files, before finding it. And there it was. Her feelings played thug of war, she wasn't sure if she wanted to cry or laugh. She couldn't believe that he was crazy enough to think he could pull this off.

There sitting in the folder marked "Contracts 2", were plans and emails, sent back and forth. Plans, that would trip and tumble into a pile of epic fail if a single step was missed.

She heard a door in the office close. She froze for a split second and quickly started shutting down everything as quietly as she could, even as she heard the footsteps coming towards her.

The pen dropped and rolled away to a corner. It made a light sound on the carpeted floor. The computer was taking too long as it was updating some programmes before shut down. A scene made for movies.

Rolling under the table would be stupid especially if he walked in and sat down. She fell to her knees on the floor, and crawled to a corner. As big as the office was, there was no place to hide. She knew she was going to look stupid. Nothing, nothing was going to fix this.

The knob turned and the door opened. It stopped halfway as the computer made its last whirring sound to mark complete shut down. The world stood still. The second hand on the clock ticked silently, thundering to her heartbeat. She was afraid to breathe. Her mind was like tinder, swiping left every excuse that popped up.

As the door shut and the footsteps faded away, she hoped that she would pull off the part of the surprised birthday girl in a couple of days better than this.
