Pictures On the Wall

I just had my graduation picture taken after almost 8 years of being a graduate.

You may wonder why, and why only now. The truth is before, I don't have any plans of doing it, it doesn't matter to me at all. The moment they told me that I am officially a graduate after submitting my clearances, I left the university to focus full time on my job.

You see, the only thing that matters to me before was to be able to finish a degree so that I can have some leverage that I need, so me and my family can survive.

But last month, my parentals insisted that I need go to a studio and have my graduation picture taken. I got confused as to why are they asking me to do this all of a sudden. They just told me they want to hang it on our wall together with the graduation picture of my other brothers for everyone to see and know that they also have a daughter (for I never stayed too long in our house.)

A day before I leave them again, my Ma talked to me, she told me that the real reason as to why they're insisting their weird request it is because at their age, it brought them much bliss and pride to see or have a 'picture' to remind them, that despite their hardships, torments, and apprehension we were able to finish school and that God has truly been very good and has never forsaken us.

Yes, it is just a picture—for some it would mean nothing, just an absurd exaggeration of achievement or something to show-off—but whatever other people think doesn't concern me. I am my parents daughter, I may not owe them anything just like what they always tell me, but I'd do everything double time, even weird stuff just to make them happy.

It's a funny thing about mothers and fathers. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful.—Roald Dahl
