Can Makeup Speed Up Your Skin’s Aging Process?

Are you guilty of sleeping in your makeup? Not even after a late night when you’re absolutely exhausted and can’t be bothered with your usual cleansing and moisturizing routine?

A recent study found a third of women are sleeping in their makeup at least twice a week.

But what harm can makeup have on your skin, and does it add to the aging process?

Many of us spend a lot of time and money on anti-aging products and state-of-the-art makeup, but is all of this wasted if we forget some of the basic skincare essentials?

You have to follow the right skin care routine:

Sleeping in Makeup Adds to the Skin’s Aging Process

To find out just how harmful makeup can be on your skin if you don’t wash it off properly, one lady spent a month sleeping in and adding to her makeup. The results were quite terrifying.

Anna Pursglove used to follow a healthy skincare regimen, cleansing and washing her face every night before she went to bed. However, for thirty days she got rid of her usual cleansing creams and applied her makeup on top of the previous day’s remnants.

At the end of this period, Anna’s skin had enlarged pores, deeper wrinkles, and it was dry, red, and inflamed. Experts estimated that after this thirty- day experiment, Anna’s skin had aged by a decade (yes, ten whole years!).

They explained that, by not cleansing properly, environmental pollutants could build up on the skin, which increases the production of free radicals. These, over time, break down elastin and collagen, which are crucial to younger-looking skin.

Therefore, even though these structures do naturally deteriorate as you get older, not cleansing properly can speed up this process.

Other Ways Makeup Adds to the Aging Process

Another common mistake people make is using makeup as the only means of sun protection – and that’s even if they’re using foundation with SPF protection in it. If you’re using foundation with SPF protection in it, you need to apply two teaspoons worth to achieve the required sun protection!

Furthermore, SPF protection is only protecting you against UVB rays, while it’s UVA rays that can cause cancer and age your skin. To make sure you’re fully covered, apply a sunscreen as well as your foundation, or try using mineral foundation.

Another thing women also tend to forget is, as you get older, using too much makeup can enhance your fine lines, pores, and wrinkles. So, as you age, make sure you don’t go overboard with your makeup and use it to beautify your skin rather than cover it up completely.

The good news is, makeup on its own isn’t going to bring you out in wrinkles. However, it will add years to your looks if you aren’t following the right skincare routines after wearing it.

Remember!! – never wear makeup to bed and always cleanse properly. And if you really can’t be bothered, use a makeup wipe and dollop some moisturizer on your face before you close your eyes. Doing this will ensure your makeup isn’t adding to your skin’s aging process.
