I guess I never even thought of this happening!
Every chick that we hatched last year was yellow. Then "Dave the chick" hatched this year, and he was yellow too. Every yellow chick from last year grew up to be white feathered chickens and roosters, unlike the "red" hens that hatched them. Then.... we hatched a red chick today!
GINGER, OR CHERRY?
Here's a photo of Dave the chick and his mama. That's about how they looked tonight, but I noticed that there was a cracked shell next to them, so I wanted to get a peek under the hen. Sure enough, Dave the chick is a Big Brother now, and he's got the cutest Little Sister!
While I'm not sure what sex this chick is, I'm thinking of calling it "Ginger" for now. @Mama-pepper was thinking "Cherry." What do you guys think? I'll put an image of her with each name below, and you can help "vote" on what to call her by replying to the image with the name that you like best. The photo with the most comments upon the post payout will be the name. Also, if you think you've got a better name, just copy the title image and add the name you want, and we'll see if people like that one better!
Here's a photo of the whole family together so far, although a few eggs are still under the hen. We will see how many more hatch, since this was more of an unplanned pregnancy and we just kind of let it happen.
As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:
