In my house, we are doing our Earth Deed almost every day by diverting our kitchen waste from landfills and gardening organically.
Composting and Vermicomposting
Every day, my wife saves our kitchen scraps in a container that she leaves on the kitchen top. The scraps are divided into two categories: what can be given to the worms and what can be given to the black soldier fly larvae. In vermicomposting, we usually avoid certain food such as meat or dairy product but those types of food can be given to the black soldier fly larvae that will consume them in less than 24 hours (if not overfeeding).
Composting and vermicomposting is known to help with carbon sequestration in the soil and hence reduce greenhouse gas emission.
Not only does composting and vermicomposting reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfills to rot and leach into ground water, they also create Earth best soil amendment which will help heal the soil that is damaged by modern agriculture.
Grow your own food organically
As you can see in my previous ULOG (check the links at the bottom of this post), I'm also growing my own fruits and vegs. I don't have a big garden so obviously I can't grow all sort of things but I do grow what we eat often and what we really like. I've converted my useless backyard lawn into a veggie patch.
Garden waste are converted into plant food and returned to the soil via composting and mulching. At least I know that the land surrounding my house is healthy and chemical-free.
And gardening is also another of trapping carbon into the soil, check this video out:
Spread the word and share the knowledge
Not only do I have spent hours and hours reading articles and scientific papers to learn more about worm farming and black soldier fly farming to get the best of my operation and help my gardening but I also try to spread the word and share what I learned. Before joining Steem, I was on various Facebook groups where I'm also a moderator or an admin:
- Red Worm Composting (Worm Farming/Vermicomposting)
- The Worm Farming Alliance
- Backyard farming all farming tips and tricks
I've also produced ebooks to help people with their worm farming and BSF issues:
- Worm Bin, Setup & Maintenance
- Introduction to composting with Black Soldier Fly Larvae
- A guide to composting with Black Soldier Fly Larvae
And I also sell my stuffs locally on my website The Little Worm Farm
That is how I try to maximise the impact of my little activities and help our little planet Earth.
