Searching for Hive growth

I was playing with a script that I wrote a while back. It does a basic search of Hive accounts to see how many people are active in a selection of countries. I am counting them as active if they have done something in the last month. The criteria for the countries is very simple and it will miss a fair few, but it can still show trends. The first number is for the last month and the second is from when I ran this a couple of months ago.

Australia: 133, 143
Austria: 53, 53
Bangladesh: 107, 125
Belgium: 37, 40
Brasil: 140, 133
Canada: 145, 171
China: 34, 46
Cuba: 144, 81
Egypt: 1, 2
El Salvador: 3, 3
France: 60, 72
Germany: 268, 293
Ghana: 48, 0
Hong Kong: 14, 13
India: 182, 218
Indonesia: 242, 369
Iran: 19, 20
Israel: 16, 15
Italy: 98, 119
Japan: 45, 48
Malaysia: 85, 95
Myanmar: 31, 39
Netherlands: 64, 63
Nigeria: 466, 530
Norway: 30, 31
Paraguay: 18, 18
Philippines: 392, 418
Poland: 74, 84
Russia: 33, 36
South Africa: 94, 103
South Korea: 24, 30
Spain: 83, 97
Thailand: 39, 43
Turkey: 33, 37
Ukraine: 90, 114
Venezuela: 1683, 1625
Vietnam: 18, 23
USA: 291, 341

You can see that numbers have dropped in a lot of countries. For Indonesia it is around 30%. Nigeria and the USA also lost a fair few. Cuba, on the other hand, is booming. Venezuela has the most by far and is growing. I think growth of Hive is going to be uneven, but if it gets more established in somewhere like Venezuela then people will take notice. Obviously it makes a big difference to people there to even earn a few dollars.

I only added Ghana this time, but I know there is good work going on there. You make notice that the UK is missing, but then I have a different script that searches very thoroughly for people and about 150 are currently active. You can track that on the #BritList posts.

It would be easier to track this sort of thing if people were more consistent with their profile location data, but that is not enforced and people can be as vague as they like.

I think we need to be concerned that people are leaving Hive even as it gains functionality. I get that some think that crypto is in a slump, but you can earn here every day in many ways. Even automated voting can get you around 8% APR on your HP. I expect there may be a fair few just taking HBD interest, but that does not show up in these numbers.

As well as recruiting new Hivers we need to keep existing people engaged. I would not be surprised if a lot of people give up after a few weeks. It does take effort to build engagement, but if you can build some sort of community around a common interest then you have the start of something. I really think Hive can be better for this than some of the alternative platforms despite its limitations.

I am interested in suggestions for countries to add, but also to hear from people in different countries about how their community is doing.

The future of Hive is in our hands.
