The Trump government reportedly launched a cyber attack on Iran's military infrastructure. However, the Iranian government is not impressed and already seems to have launched retaliatory actions.
"Not successful"
This is essentially what Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi, Iranian Minister of Telecommunications, just said on Twitter, following the revelation by American media of a recent American cyber attack on his country's military infrastructure.
“Media asked if the claimed cyber attacks against Iran are true,” he said. “I must say that we have long faced cyber-terrorism[...] and unilateralism[of the United States]. None of their attacks have been successful, although they are making a lot of efforts in this direction. Last year we neutralized 33 million attacks with the (national) firewall.”
On Saturday, American media reported that the United States had launched cyber attacks against Iranian missile launch systems and an Iranian spy network two days after Tehran destroyed an American drone.
US President Donald Trump canceled last minute scheduled strikes against Iran after the destruction of the surveillance drone on June 20.
However, it has secretly allowed retaliation in the form of cyber attacks against Iranian defense systems, Yahoo! news and the Washington Post said.
Iranian "wipers" target American industry
According to the Washington Post newspaper, one of the cyber attacks targeted computers used to control missile and rocket launches.
These cyber attacks, which had been planned for several weeks, were initially proposed by the US military as a response to the mid-June attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington accuses Iran of being at the origin of these attacks, which Tehran denies.
According to Yahoo! news, the other computer attack hit a spy network responsible for monitoring ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The escalation of cyber violence does not seem to be over.
The Cybersecurity Agency of the Department of Homeland Security (CISA-DHS) issued an alert on Saturday about a wave of Iranian cyber attacks targeting "industrial infrastructure and government agencies" in a destructive manner.
“Iranian regime actors and proxies are increasingly using destructive ‘wiper’ attacks, looking to do much more than just steal data and money. These efforts are often enabled through common tactics like spear phishing, password spraying, and credential stuffing. What might start as an account compromise, where you think you might just lose data, can quickly become a situation where you’ve lost your whole network” the release says.
“This operation imposes costs on the growing Iranian cyberthreat, but also serves to defend the United States Navy and shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz,” said Thomas Bossert, a former senior White House cybersecurity official in the Trump administration.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, said Iran’s cyber defense system was strong, and that Iran could legally pursue such aggression in international courts. “We do not want rise of tensions and its consequences.”
