A tiny help

She was looking, first to the right, then to the left - just like her forefathers had taught her.
It was more of a habit as necessary. What she saw was always the same. Some old buildings, weird trees covered with humps and an empty road. It had always been like this.
Her great grandfather told once streetlights burned and brightened up the dark and so many cars drove it was hard to cross a road. There was no need for streetlights it was always bright. Still, she did as they taught her by now a very long time ago.
She could not remember how old she was and how come she was still around in a world abandoned by humans totally unexpected.

The scratching noises became louder and louder and it sounded like wood was splintering.
She waited, stared at the huge tree in front of her. There was no reason to hurry. Going out, having a walk, counting each step, it all became a habit too. It wasn't necessary to do so but still, she couldn't help doing it.

"Let's have a closer look at it", she murmured while crossing the road and focussing on the tree that clearly caused the sounds she had never heard before.

"It looks as if it will leave this world before me."

She touched its bark embraced it and smelled the odor of... was it blood dripping? She looked at her hands and wiped it off on her skirt.

"Are you sick, it will be empty without you."

"Treehugger get out of here, this one will fall", a high voice said.

Bewildered she looked around her.

"Out of the way I said", the voice yelled and before she could blink her eyes she was pushed aside by a tiny just before the giant fell.
