NaNoWriMo 20 - Taking care.

I wrote over 44k words by now. I started on November 4th. I will use 25K words for my story. I made one file out of these parts. About 8 days to go. If I write 3,125 words story only these days I have 50K for my tale. That does not sound hard.

What the tale is about.

  • The main character is the last man on earth. He created a new life in a world of rocks and stones after the Big Bang. Before he ran out and made a promise to the first living.
  • A helpful and advising friend turns out to be the ghost of an inventor and a tyrant.
  • The first living are stones. They are what their name says "the first living" but it is unclear if they are "the elderly" too according to the voice...
  • The voice. So annoying at the start of this tale. It comes, interferes and goes. Only a sick mind can make up a voice he only hears.
  • The giants. For some reason, they do not speak, turned green and turn into stone as soon as the cold ghost shows up. They are created by the father (aka the last man on earth).
  • A "corpse" in a suit is found and saved just like more items of the creator.

So far the story is easy to understand.
Life is good, the project went well and the giants go out. It all went wrong as the ghost envied the creator, showed itself and tried to possess a giant.
This is a tale a happy end is expected. The good news is the ghost does not succeed and ends up in a jar. The bad news is the father fell into a ravine and the ghosts escaped.

How will this story end and who will take care of the giants and newborns?

Yesterday the story ended with a giant waiting for his father to wake up. It took some time but he did and the good news is the giant will take him home like he asked.

“You live here?”

He looked at his new friend who didn't answer and showed him the way into a grotto.

“What a great place you guys have.”

He ran through the cave from one bed to another and inspected the end of it where a smaller bed was made.

“I wonder who sleeps here.”

He looked around but could not discover anyone with his size. His new friend and his mates were all giants. They are not moved and waited.

“I don't know. This place does not look like my home. It is different... I think my mom waits for me.”

He sank down on the small bed and thought. This was a great place for sure but not his home although it looked familiar. How did he end up here? First, he walked over the hill and next... Next, there was nothing.
Cat, Cat was there! He was sure she told him she searched for him and she had pointed him at the giants. Was Cat still around?

“Have you seen Cat? She is huge and black, even you couldn't have missed her.”

None of the green giants spoke. They all seemed to wait. He observed them closely. What friendly faces they had. At home, he had never met a giant before. It was hard to believe they once were small babies. Probably as tiny as he once was. His mother told him he did grow fast, faster as any child but he wasn't as tall as these creatures.

“Are you the only ones? I mean do you have more family, parents, brothers perhaps.”

For a moment he thought he saw a sign of recognition. There are more, he thought, perhaps even babies. As a single child with an elderly mother, he had never seen a baby in his life. The animals never had given birth either.

The giants did not move or say a word as he stood up and walked out of the cave.

“It is nice of you to invite me here but I have to go home. Perhaps you misunderstood or I asked the wrong question...” he hesitated, unsure what to do, how to find his way home. His friend waited looked as if he was made out of stone.

“I don't know the way home but I guess I will find it. I like it... If you want we can walk around before I go.”

He took his friend's hand and stared at his own. It was green and so was his other. When did that happen? He rubbed his hands at his clothes. He couldn't wipe it off it was his skin, no paint.

“There is a reason for everything,” a voice said.

He heard the words clearly. They sounded familiar to him.

“Cat, is that you? Where are you? Don't play games with me.”

Did his mind play tricks with him? He pushed his hands against his ears and still heard the sentence repeated: “There is a good reason for everything, there is a good reason for everything, there is a good reason for everything.”

Bewildered he looked around him. Not one of the creatures had moved. They looked like frozen. The smile at their faces hadn't changed.

“Have you heard that voice?” He pulled at and shook his friend's hand. He didn't respond. It stood there, just stood there and smiled at him.

“Fine, you didn't hear it but I did. Do not tell me I am crazy. I don't make this up. I just wish, I wish...”

Although he felt close to a mental breakdown he was a fighter. Not intended to give up that easily. Mom waited for him and he had seen the cat. That voice must be hers. She always gave him advice and tried to cheer him up with it. Showing up unexpectedly was her style and it was not more as logical for her to follow him over here.

“You noisy cat, leave me alone. I will come back but not before I discovered this place. You told me they waited for me. I cannot disappoint them.”

He pulled the green giant along with him.

“Let's take that walk now.”
