For many centuries in the Balearic Islands a type of soft rock, called marés, was used for the construction of mainly public buildings, such as churches, walls and even lighthouses. This type of rock was extracted from quarries along the coast, where the quarrymen cut it into blocks and transported it by barge to the place where the building was to be constructed. Today these quarries are abandoned and have left an almost surrealistic mark on the landscape.
These aerial images show one of these quarries, Sa Punta Pedrera, on the coast of Portmany Bay on the island of Ibiza.
