The Value of Making Your Bed

Growing up, I never understood the point in making my bed

As a child and throughout most of my adult life, I assumed that making one's bed was a superficial act that was a waste of one's time and energy. Afterall, aren't we just going to mess it up again once we get back into bed? I don't really care how my bed looks, so why should I spend the time making it?

Making my bed seemed like it was something that people just did because that's what they were told to do, much like many things in our culture. I always believed it was a pointless ritual with no real benefit to the individual beyond a thin aesthetic improvement.

It wasn't until very recently that I discovered the small, yet powerful benefit that making my bed has in terms of my overall outlook and perspective.

Making your bed is a subtle, yet powerful act of intention

In the last month, I've finally begun the bed-making ritual as a part of my morning routine. I'm not a perfectionist about it, and since we don't use a top sheet it's as simple as laying our blanket smoothly over the surface of our bed.

I have found that this simple act is a constant reminder that the small things in life add up over time, and that by making our bed we are able to start our day off by completing a task. Every time I enter our room, I am greeted with the sight of a task completed, which is also a welcome sight in our often cluttered space.

Clutter is the enemy of productivity, and an unmade bed is a reminder that we are not taking care of the small tasks in my life. One small act doesn't seem that significant, but once you have a list of 10 'small' activities to complete, you begin to understand that these things matter greatly.

What I have come to realize is that all of these small, seemingly insignificant acts make a tremendous difference in the course of our life.

By recognizing the value of the small things, we set ourselves up for success with the larger tasks. These large tasks are almost always made up of many smaller tasks, which reinforces the importance of not overlooking the little acts in our day-to-day life.

The cliche of 'it's the small things in life that matter most' has a degree of truth to it, especially when you break down the momentous events in our life into all the components that brought them into being. The value of a made bed is a powerful reflection and acknowledgment that we care about the little things in life.
