Summer Beach Flowers
Wondering over the dunes before the heat becomes too much for your feet, it still amazes me the flowers we find on the sand dunes, beach flowers or flowers that survive the harsh conditions of sand, sea and sun.
The Flame Lily above I must confess I have never seen one on the beach before, it caught my eye with it's brilliant colour against the side of a dune. Hidden slightly among roots, old sticks on a steep dune, perhaps it was carried down with recent rains higher up the river.
No longer close to the riverside, how it came to survive on the beach with it's tendrils clinging onto nearby plants was fascinating. This plant has grown no taller than 20 to 30 cm (normally taller in stature), not a beach frequented by many, I will have to see how long it will exist here. They are poisonous to people and pets if eaten.
The Flame Lily got selected for first post position being an unusual find on the beach, making the most of a situation it landed itself in, apparently they get pods with seed which will burst perhaps in years to come there will be a colourful patch of yellow and orange during the summer months.
Next up looks like a daisy, with long limbs straddling across the sand dunes, these are regulars on the dunes making a pretty display in bright yellow.
Fig-leafed morning glory did not appear as cheerful as they normally are, starting to go out of season with rich colour fading, appearing more washed out.
Before I do a sun dance on this beach getting quite hot at ten in the morning a quick look back to show you the patches of plants showing up on the dunes, some areas the flowers are established, patches start up as if washed onto the shore, clinging to life they grow in under-nourished soil.
Preserving the plant life on beaches is a priority, avoid walking on plants, help manage our ecosystem, rehabilitation from human footprints, please walk carefully doing no harm.
Most of the gray/green patches you see are nick-named the Beach Bum this I will leave for another day on hardy coastal plants.
