A Simple French Onion Soup
It's currently the 15th week of the @steemit-ironchef challenge. The special ingredient for this week is one of my favorites: The Onion. I could eat onions with pretty much anything, they are loaded with flavor and serve as a great natural detox for the body. In this recipe we will use a bunch of onions to create a simple French Onion Soup. You can use either red or white onions for this soup, but I chose to go with red this time.
Ingredients
4 Cups of Sliced Onions
1 Stick of Butter
2 Tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Tablespoons of Sherry Wine
42 Ounces of Beef Broth
1 Teaspoon of Dried Thyme
French Bread
Provolone Cheese
Swiss Cheese
Parmesan Cheese
Salt & Pepper
Step 1: Melt Butter with Oil
In a large pot, melt the stick of butter with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.
Step 2: Add the Onions & Cook
Add the 4 cups of sliced onions and cook down until somewhat translucent
Step 3: Add the Broth, Sherry & Thyme
Pour in 42 oz of beef broth and 2 tablespoons of sherry wine. Sprinkle in a teaspoon of dried thyme and some salt & pepper for tasting. Simmer for a half hour.
Step 4: Pour Into Oven-Safe Bowls
Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Leave some room on top.
Step 5: Add French Bread
Float some french bread on top of the french onion soup.
Step 6: Add the Cheese
Add 1 Slice of Provolone, 1 Slice of Swiss and a bit of grated Parmesan cheese to the tops of the floating french bread.
Step 7: Broil
Place the soup bowls in the oven on broil until the cheese starts to bubble and golden up.
Step 8: Enjoy!
Be careful with the hot soup dish! Serve and enjoy. An extra slice of bread for dipping is always a great idea!
