A Gift Horse?
"Excuse me, sir?"
I said, "Yes?"
He says while pulling out an ungodly huge wad of cash, "Would it offend you if I wanted to give you some money?"
I was kind of confused, but said, "Well, no I suppose not."
"You have to promise to spend it on these gorgeous little girls for Christmas though."
I chuckled a bit.
"Of course, I'd give them anything."
Then he kind of cocked his head with a weird almost grin and asked, "Do you need it?"
I looked into his soul and to a very rare surprise, I didn't see one. Which prodded my honesty all the more. So I replied, "Honestly? No, we don't. You would probably do well to find another family as we are pretty well set this year, but thank you for your offer of kindness."
"Are you sure? I'm loaded and want to give this away, it is the season of giving after all."
To which I simply stated and started to continue our walk, "no but thank you, I hope you find someone that needs it more and have a Merry Christmas!"
He said, "you have a beautiful family," and gave what almost sounded what I would imagine a Santa Claus guffaw to sound like and drove off saying, "Merry Christmas!"
He easily had a handful of ten grand or more. In my younger days, I may have rolled him out the truck and had a new vehicle with some spending money. There was something about him though. I don't know if he was just a lonely old single man with plenty to spare and had a visit from the ghosts of Christmas or if he was beyond normal human understanding. Whichever the case, it was - an interesting encounter. Usually, I'm the one offering handouts.
I'm not telling this story to brag about my honesty and good will or any shit like that. I'm putting it out there because it has two lessons or morals on the day. One for my daughters and one for you, the audience. I asked Luna if we should have taken the money and she looked into my soul, pausing us on our walk and said, "No dad, other people need it more." That got my heartstrings and nudged my conscience to conclude that maybe I'm doing something right with these princesses.
The final thing that I think needs to be outlined from this encounter is that it is the season of giving. This guy had that generous spirit firing on all 8 cylinders in that truck. So my point to you is, find that spirit. Hold it tight, regardless what religion or holiday (if any) you celebrate, and push it forward with full force. Spread the love. Oh and uh, REMEMBER TO BE YOU! I always am, even when angels tease me.
