March is almost over. Officially the spring sprung. And I have already done some posts about March holidays. Such as:
March, 1st - when we celebrate the Martenitza day.
March, 8th - celebrating the International Women's Day.
March, 22nd - first day of spring.
However there are other holidays that I missed to mention or make posts about.
Now I will give you an overview of other March holidays in Bulgaria.
March 3rd
Bulgarian National Holiday - The Liberation
On March, 3rd 1978 the peace treaty berween Russia and the Ottoman Empire was signed. This put the end of the war between them and Bulgaria regained its independence from the Ottoman Empire after five centuries. This day marks the new beginning for my country.
The photo I choose is from the peak Shipka where the battle for the pass took place. Russian troops together with Bulgarian volunteers defended the pass from the outnumbering Ottoman army. This was a crucial moment for the progress of the war.
The monument was built in a shape of tower with a bronze lion in front to commemorate those who fought and died in the Russian - Ottoman war. Inside a sarcophagus keeps the remains of the Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who died in the battle.
March 10th
The second Sunday before lent or Shrovetide.
This day is known for asking forgivness from the parents and elderly people. Families will gather round the table. Traditionally a boiled egg or piece of white halva (nougat) on a string is dropped from the ceiling and the aim is to catch it with your mouth without hands. This is fun game mainly for the children.
Another tradition on that day is so called Kukeri. Men with big masks are dancing to scare away the evil. They are dressed in costumes with bells on their waists and the masks made of wool, wood, horns and fabrics are made really to look scary.
March 16th
St. Todor's Day.
This is not a fixed date for celebrating St. Todor's Day. It is always on Saturday, six days after Shrovetide. It is also called Horse Easter because of the horse races held on that day. This tradition is still kept more or less like in the past. Men prepare their best horses, decorate them with coloured threads, beads. On a large meadow the whole village will gather to watch the race. The winner will receive a bag with food, wreath and big respect.
