When I was looking for weaving materials, I thought Tokyo, my hometown is one of the best city for prototyping.
織物の材料を探していて、東京ってプロトタイプに最適な街だなあと思いました。離れてみてわかる魅力。
Tokyo is well known for … actually I don’t know for what … the city size, sky scrapers, the unique culture, food, sight seeing places such as Toyosu (former Tsukiji) market probably.
東京は・・・一体なんで有名なんだろう？ごっちゃりおもしろいものが詰まっているところ？？多分街のサイズや高層ビル、ユニークな文化、食べ物、築地などの観光地・・・なのかな。海外の人におすすめを聞かれると、人によって結構進める場所が変わるかも。
However when I miss Tokyo, it’s mostly the time I cannot find material for prototyping. Of course almost all the things are available on the Internet. But in Tokyo, there are various stores and small areas specified to some field. For example Akihabara is famous for electronic parts, Kappabashi for kitchen supplies and packing and Nippori for fabric. There are huge stores for handcraft Yuzawaya and DIY stuffs Tokyu Hands and DIY stores called “home centers” are in a bit outer area.
私自身がどんな時に東京が恋しくなるかというと、試作の材料がみつからない時です。ああ！もう！ハンズがあれば！ユザワヤがあれば！！となります。インターネットでなんでも手に入る時代ですが、台所や調理用品が包装まで含めてなんでも揃う合羽橋、生地の日暮里、秋葉原の電子部品。
There are co-working spaces. Fablabs too. Certainly there are good Maker communities too.
東京にはファブラボもあって、いい Maker コミュニティーもあることでしょう。
Even if something is not available at stores, items bought on internet arrive in a surprising speed inside Japan.
何か手に入らないものがあってもインターネットで注文すると日本では爆速で届きます。ヤマトはじめ宅配の方には大変なことなのですが。
So if someone is thinking about prototyping, I recommend to stay in Tokyo for 7-14 days.
そんなこんなで、誰かが何かをプロトタイピングしてみたいんだけどなと相談してきたら、間違いなく東京へ1、2週間行って作ってくることを勧めます。
