On Top Of The Hverfjall Volcano Explosion Crater, Iceland

In this post I'm going to show you a volcano explosion crater on Iceland, I also climbed on top of it. This mountain is located on northern Iceland, not far from the lake Myvatn. If you want to know the exact location then look up @steemitworldmap comment in the section below.
This is a huge explosion crater was active around 2500 years ago. When you go there in the summer, you can see it looks totally black. That's because it's a mountain that consists of ash. The crater is almost 400 meters high and 1 kilometer wide. It is possible to walk up to the steep slope and hike around the volcano upper ring.

Yes, we decided to take this hike. Even though it was already 12 AM at night, this wasn't a problem for us. Weather in Iceland won't go dark in that time of the season. Hike up the slope wasn't crazy hard but definitely tiring and takes some effort to walk that steep slope. Once you are up you can see inside the crater and see that middle part. That's much more huge than it looks like. It's about 200 meters wide and about 60 meters high.

It is not possible to see the scale how big it really is from the photo, If there was a human in the center on a photo, then he/she would look like a small dot. I was hoping for clear skies but unfortunately, we reached to the clouds when we were on the top and couldn't get the best view of all the volcano up there. We started to walk on the rim to make a circle around the volcano. It took us 45 minutes to reach back to the place we started walking around.

On the highest spot of the crater, we could see a little over the low clouds.
I also took some lava stones from that place and brought em back to Estonia with me.

When walking there it is really amazing scenery there. It looks like a place out of this world and the views to the surrounding areas are spectacular.

I also thought that maybe we could go down to the center of the volcano but I really miscalculated the distance with my eyes. At first, that didn't look like a huge deal but when we were halfway down we started to see the full scale of this and how hard it would be to get back up again afterward. It was much steeper than the outter mountain walking. We decided to stop there and just stand there for a bit before walking up again.

When standing, there was this silence I had never heard before. A total silence, the air was absolutely still. When you are at home and you go to sleep, you think its quiet, trust me it's not. At home, you still hear vent blowing quietly or whatever sounds. When you are in a quiet place in nature, you still hear some animal crawling in the grass or something from the distance. This wasn't the case in the volcano, all the sounds were fully blocked. No wind, not a single animal or sound from the sky. All I could hear was a blood flowing in my head. Really fucking strange it was.
