Bulgaria is best known for its beach resorts of Varna, or the ski resorts of Bansko, but Plovdiv was our favourite place when visiting in August. The city is going through a cultural revival since choosing to dedicate a vast amount of its resources into arts, culture and music around the city – earning the title of European Capital of Culture for 2019.
From the top of Nebet Hill.
Originally a Thracian settlement, Plovdiv was subsequently invaded by Greeks, Persians, Celts, Romans, Goths, Huns, Slavs, Crusaders, and Turks.
Plovdiv's Roman Theatre was Constructed between 98–117 AD, and is still in use today.
The city has also been called Eumolpia, Paldin, and Trimontium, but its most famous name was Philippopolis, after Phillip II of Macedon. Plovdiv was also ranked the 6th oldest living city in the world and the 1st in Europe.
Plovdiv's rich history has given it one of the most charming old towns in Eastern Europe. It is located on one of seven hills, Nebet Hill, which was our favourite because it is a beautiful spot for watching the sunset.
Like many cities in Europe, it has crafted its old town into a modern, tourist-friendly layout, and Just walking around it provides plenty of things to do and see as it contains many of the top attractions in the country.
Our first trip as husband and wife.
