The second area in Tongdo-sa temple seemed divided into two parts.
The first part was the halls for Buddhas and Bodhisattva, and the second part was the buildings for the founder monk of this temple.
In this posting, I’d like to introduce the hall for Buddhas.
There were two buildings next to the Gwaneum-Jeon hall serving for the Bodhisattva of the great compassion.
The first one was the hall of Yongwha-jeon serving for Maitreya Buddha, Buddha of the future.
There was a stone pagoda in front of Yongwha-jeon. This pagoda was said to symbolize the bawl and the cloth of Shakyamuni Buddha. The future Buddha, the Bodhisattva Maitreya will save people after Shakyamuni Buddha in the future world.
So this stone pagoda in the name of Bongbal-tap could be interpreted as the continuation of Buddhist teachings.
Below is the hall for Maitreya Buddha. It shows typical style of architecture in late
Goryeo dynasty.
But the joint part of the cornerstone and the pillar seems like the style of Choson dynasty.
There was Daegwangmyeon-jeon next to Yongha-Jeon. Daegwangmyeong-jeon hall was dedicated to serve for Vairochana Buddha, the Buddha of Cosmic Energy.
The decorations and ornaments of this hall made me amazing. Especially the carvings of dragons on the eavesdrops were so vivid despite of long time.
The arrangement of those halls were somewhat strange for me. Usually the Yongwha-jeon and the Daegwangmyeong-jeon were not arranged in such a narrow area.
