There is no Buddha statue in Daewung-jeon of Tongdo-sa, because it is said that there is the real body of Buddha. It was known as the teeth of Buddha. It is believed the great monk ‘Jijang’ had brought the sarira of teeth into Shilla dynasty when he had finishing study the teachings of Buddha in China.
In fact, there are several temples urging that they have the sarira of Buddha.
But Tongdo-sa temple is the most representative among those temples and was officially recognized.
In Catholic Church, Many Church have the body of the saint and the satire. In my opinion, both Buddhism and Catholic church seemed like to have the common religious background. There are so many common things in both religions.
Anyway there was a small building to protect the monument on which the record, how the sarira of Buddha was brought, was carved.
The door to the sarira pagoda was closed, so people could see the pagoda near the mountain god hall where was the highest place around the Sarira pagoda.
The garden near the mountain god hall was very well cared for and the pond was so nice for looking around.
The name of the sarira pagoda was ‘Diamond Steps’. In general, the shape was simple. The simpler, the more better in many cases. There were no particular ornaments or decorations on the sarira pagoda.
The teeth of Buddha have been preserved in the shape of the Bell.
The simple is the best.
