The bee hotel
Today I finally decided to use those left over wood and some logs I have collected to build a bee hotel in the backyard. Native bees in Australia are mostly solitary and build their nest in existing environment such as holes in trees, hollow logs etc... So building an habitat for them is pretty easy.
I started with those left over pine wood planks (not ideal for outdoors but we'll see) to make the frame.
I then added the back wall and a roof at 22 degrees angle to allow rain water to run down. I then took some wood logs and using a hole cutter borer I drilled many holes of diameters from 8 to 12 mm at about 12 to 15 cm depth.
The bee hotel is finally completed and I installed it on a pole hammered into the ground. It's a bit wobbly so I might have to hammer some more next weekend. The bee hotel has been installed in a corner of the garden where there will be flowers. I'm very excited and looking forward to see some bees making their nest. I saw some blue banded bees last year so I will have to make them some habitat out of clay and add it to the bee hotel.
