Kapok Tree

This is a flowering Kapok tree. It is one of many varieties of the Kapok trees family. I saw this in Benalmadena, Malaga, Spain during my recent holidays.

I walked past the tree many times and didn’t noticed anything unusual about it. One day, I saw some people looking, and pointing up at the tree. Out of curiosity, I stopped and looked up at the tree too – to see what they were so excited about.

I saw these ‘cotton balls’.

I thought they were flowers, but they were not. A friend explained, “... what's unusual about the Kapok is that the bud actually looks like a fruit itself. On these trees, they're like large olives and these burst and the flower comes out of that. Just how the fruit forms from there, I am not too sure, but they look like dark-coloured tennis balls - then the outer cover splits off and drops, leaving the cotton balls, which are actually the seeds of the tree.”

The buds look like olives.

This is another variety of the Kapok tree. The flowers looked so different I wasn't sure if they were Kapok flowers until I googled them.
