Irola – Balan Center
The PCS unit in the Balan HQ buzzed and Belmara Wolfkin answered it. “Yes, Curator?”
“Please report your situation.”
“I’m so glad you called us in. This building was poorly maintained when Zarkonn was in charge. I’m almost amazed the place was still standing when we walked in here today. I will have it cleaned up within the week,”
“Sounds like it is in good hands now. What about recruitment?”
“Fashi is working hard on that.”
“Keep an eye out for Derick Aiden. He is a known friend of the A’mara. I expect him to go to them for protection,” the Curator’s scrambled voice said.
“We will keep a close watch,” Fashi replied. “I have a direct link to all the City of Irola security cameras.”
“Any sign of Ralun’s missing student?” the Curator asked.
“Who?” Belmara asked.
“The Nameless One, in his careless actions, has relinquished his Nameless status and must return to using his name: Ralun Gullan,” the Curator replied.
“There were a couple of leya imprints in the place when we came in earlier, but they were fairly weak. If one of them belongs to Ralun’s student, she’s with someone else and they aren’t hanging around here anymore,” Fashi replied.
“Keep your awareness open for them. I want to know who she is hanging around with. If she is training, she may be a threat to us,” the Curator explained.
Irola – A’mara Complex
Ja’tel Krijo was enjoying his evening meal together with his wife, Saraca.
“I think it’s time to send more A’mara to Gaskarii,” Saraca said. “I’ve been thinking about it for awhile now; I’ve even spoken with Tle-sun about it.”
“They definitely need a few more to help them with the election re-run,” Ja’tel agreed.
“I am actually wondering about building a new Complex there with their own abári,” Saraca said.
“Who would you call as abári?”
“Tle-sun has actually requested Yewan and I think he might be right.”
“Yewan is exemplary in every way,” Ja’tel said. “He would be a good choice to run a Complex. And in a quiet place like Loxos, he might even accept – despite his ‘101 Reasons to Not be Abári’ that he compiled after his experience of being chola to Jerreck.” He laughed, thinking about the list. His wife momentarily joined in with the laughter.
“For their election, I could also take Betel and Lataya off the databases and put Ajabo and some of our other Kri’enden transfers on that project for awhile,” Saraca said. “I’ll have them specifically looking for Joen Vaala. Tle-sun ran into him in Loxos, he is certain.”
“Sounds like a good plan,” Ja’tel said. “If Joen is still friendly to the A’mara – as his behavior towards Tle-sun hinted, then he needs to be found before the Neví do something unpleasant to him.”
“Agreed,” Saraca replied. “But in order to do that, we need to know his current alias, as he’s definitely not using Joen these days.”
“Definitely,” Ja’tel said. “He might still be hanging around in Loxos, if we’re lucky. Better send Yewan to Gaskarii first to give him some time to get the building started. Do you have a spot in mind already?”
“Jenna told me about a building on the marketplace that would be just perfect – an old abandoned newspaper building – she thinks that the new mayor might even be willing to help them out with it. So, I want to get a proposal out to her as soon as possible.”
The PCS unit buzzed and Ja’tel answered it. “Good evening, Haku.”
Ja’tel noticed Saraca drift out of the room on some small task to give him a little privacy.
“I think you can guess why I’m contacting you again, Ja’tel,” the man replied. “Derick requires protection. Will you be happy to have him again?”
“Honestly? You want me to be blunt? No, I’m not happy with Derick hiding here again. He has brought this on himself,” Ja’tel said to the image in the PCS unit. “
“I understand, Ja’tel, but you know what he’s like, headstrong and determined!” the agent replied. “Will you hide him or not?”
“Of course we will, just like I promised you last month,” Ja’tel said with a sigh. He didn’t have to like it, but he would still protect his friend, as always.
“He will be with you tomorrow, usual disguise,” the agent said. “And thank you. You have always been there for us.”
Ja’tel pressed the ‘end’ button. He sighed his frustration as his wife came back in. Saraca was much shorter, slender, with fair skin. Her purple-cloak boasted her homeland of Tephsa, the gold fringe designating her position as the planet’s overall abári for the A’mara people. Just like his own floor-length cloak in the Kri’enden tribal colors had the silver fringe for being “first husband” of the A’mara.
Saraca put her arms around him. “Kanesh, as we must remember to call him again, seems to love getting himself into hot water, doesn’t he?”
“Yes, he does,” Ja’tel said half-regretfully. “I wish I could convince him to lay off the Neví, but he is determined to bring them down with his film. It is of no surprise they want him dead.”
“You know, my love. It’s just about possible that he is the one that our time needs – to expose the Neví for what they truly are – not the altruistic society they wish to be known for. Yes, they do some good, but only when their own bottom line stands to gain and with Dr. Jarly still on the run, they are dangerous.”
“And now even more focus will be on us. It won’t take the Neví long to work out that we’re protecting Kanesh.” Ja’tel sighed again. “I totally agree with what he’s doing, but to put his real name to it?”
“He doesn’t believe in hiding behind a pseudonym. It’s not like him. And he wants the film to have the same respect that all his films have. People will know this one is genuine, simply because his name is attached.”
“At the end of the day, I know he is right. I do have to envy his courage to do what is right, even when there are strong forces against him. It’s the same dedication required of A’mara. I think that’s why I like him so much and am still more than willing to shelter him as long as we can.”
“And it’s one of the reasons why I love you so much. You will put your personal worries and emotions aside to get the job done,” Saraca said, kissing him.
“Except when it comes to you, I will never put those personal emotions aside!” Ja’tel kissed her back.
“I am glad we made the exception for each other,” Saraca said nuzzling her head against his chest.
