Question #1:

About a year ago I traveled to Nevada to see my sister. I did it precisely in the months when the most emblematic holidays of the country are celebrated: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. It was a bit overwhelming because two of those holidays are not really celebrated in my country (Venezuela) and I had no idea about it. However, the excitement was there and I think it showed because I tried to learn some things about it through my sister's family. They did celebrate those events and that was nice because they made me part of it.

For Halloween we didn't do too much as I was a bit tired from the trip, although my brother-in-law and sister insisted enough to go get candy for the neighborhood kids. However, there is no traditional meal on that day. On the contrary, for Thanksgiving everyone seems to take food very seriously. Early in the morning, the family started with the preparations: baking the turkey, making the mash, gravy, vegetables, pumpkin pie, eggnog, etc. It was a beautiful day because we all shared a great meal at the table. But there was a lot of leftover food. They don't usually eat the leftover food, but I wasn't going to let them miss out on that food so my sister and I divided it up and served it for the next few lunches in the days ahead.

Hace más o menos un año viaje a Nevada para ver a mi hermana. Lo hice justamente en los meses que se celebran las efemérides más emblemáticas del país: Halloween, Día de Gracias, Navidad y Año Nuevo. Fue algo un poco abrumador pues realmente dos de esas festividades no se celebran en mí país (Venezuela) y no tenía ni idea sobre el asunto. Sin embargo, la emoción estaba allí y creo que eso se notó porque intenté conocer algunas cosas sobre ello a través de la familia de mi hermana. Ellos sí que festejaban esos eventos y eso fue agradable pues me hicieron participe de ello.

Para Halloween no hicimos demasiado pues estaba un poco cansado por el viaje, aunque mi cuñado y hermana insistieron bastante para ir por dulces para los niños del barrio. Sin embargo, ese día no hay una comida tradicional. Por el contrario, para el Día de Acción de gracias todos parecen tomar la comida muy en serio. Desde temprano, la familia comenzó con los preparativos: hornear el pavo, hacer el pure, la salsa, vegetales, pastel de calabaza, ponche de huevo, etc. Fue un día muy bello porque todos compartimos en la mesa una buena y gran comida. Pero si que sobró bastante comida. Ellos no suelen comer la comida restante, pero yo no iba a dejar que se perdieran esa comida así que mi hermana y yo la dividimos y la servimos para los próximos almuerzos de los días cercanos.

For Christmas and New Year's it is customary to have a traditional meal (similar to Thanksgiving), however the family was busy for those days and in order not to make a fuss and leave the celebrations unnoticed, we went out to eat. Serving basically the same dishes and honestly it got to a point where I couldn't eat anything else (hahaha). What I did for those moments was to take a time slot, drink an Alka-Seltzer and let it kick in. I don't think there's any need to gorge on food thinking that it's the right thing to do because I think the body noticing the fatigue is enough to stop.

Para Navidad y Año Nuevo es costumbre hacer una comida tradicional (similar al de Día Acción de Gracias), sin embargo la familia estuvo ocupada para esos días y para no hacer un desplante y dejar desapercibida las celebraciones, salimos a comer. Sirviendo básicamente los mismos platillos y sinceramente llegó un punto en que no podía comer nada más (jajaja). Lo que hice para esos momentos fue tomar un espacio de tiempo, beber un Alka-Seltzer y dejar que haga efecto. Tampoco creo que haya necesidad de atiborrarse de comida pensando que es lo debido pues creo que el cuerpo advirtiendo el cansancio es suficiente para parar.

Question #2:

Traditionally in Venezuela, people start decorating for Christmas in late November or early December. Lately over the years, some people seem to get a little ahead of themselves but it is not the norm. The last time I decorated for Christmas was at my mom's house, around the 3rd or 4th of December. I think that's the earliest date I've started decorating the house and I think one of the reasons is because I like all the decorations to last long enough; to enjoy it, live it and contemplate it. Here everything is usually taken down around January 6th, but we always leave it a little longer. It all depends on your home as well, as clearly everyone will have their own differences.

I like the holidays during these months, especially those that involve family togetherness and friendship. They are one of my favorite dates so I try to take the time to live it and make it something memorable. Also with a lot of prudence because food is not the only excess that is usually seen around there, as for example, alcohol. So it's a matter of being aware. Tradicionalmente en Venezuela, las personas comienzan a decorar para Navidad a apartir de los últimos de noviembre o comienzos de diciembre. Últimamente con los años, algunos parecen adelantarse pero no es la norma. La última vez que decore por Navidad fue en casa de mi mamá, alrededor del 3 o 4 de diciembre. Creo que esa es la fecha más temprana en al que he comenzado a decorar la casa y creo que una de las razones es porque me gusta que toda la decoración perdure el tiempo suficiente; disfrutarlo, vivirlo y contemplarlo. Aquí se suele retirar todo alrededor del 6 de Enero, pero nosotros siempre lo dejamos un poco más. Todo depende también de casa hogar pues claramente cada quién tendrá sus diferencias.

Las fiestas de estos meses me gustan, sobre todo aquellas que conllevan a la unión familiar y la amistad. Son de mis fechas favoritas así que trato de tomar el tiempo para vivirlo y hacerlo algo memorable. También con mucha prudencia pues la comida no es el único exceso que se suele ver por allí, como por ejemplo, el alcohol. Así que es cuestión de ser conscientes.
