Saludos estimados amigos de Soluciones para el Hogar, bienvenido a mi blog. Hoy es sábado de “Salvemos el bolsillo” y justamente de eso mismo quiero hablarles. Hoy en día, dada la situación económica tan austera que atraviesa nuestro país Venezuela, mantener una casa se ha vuelto casi una misión imposible. Muchos años han trascurrido desde la última vez que se pintó mi casa. Los galones de pintura son bastante caros, claro, dependiendo de la marca. Para darle un cariñito a mi hogar, comencé con un par de galones clase A para exteriores y de color blanco, con ellos alcancé a pintar solo el frente de casa, pero solo una aplicación. El costo de cada uno fue de 20$ y para la cantidad de metros cuadrados, debía comprar dos galones más para mejorar el acabado, bastante costoso solo para pintar solo el frente.

Por si fuera poco, las paredes del porche de la casa estaban bastante feas, estaban manchadas y al ser una casa grande, el costo para pintarlas iba a ser bastante elevado por la cantidad de galones que debía comprar. Fue allí que un primo me dijo que una de las alternativas para pintar paredes es usar cal, queda todo bien blanquito y el costo es bastante bajo. Sin embargo, hay varias consideraciones que deben tomarse en cuenta al pintar con cal. La cal tiene como desventaja la poca adherencia, sobre todo en paredes lisas, además, tiende a manchar, así que se vuelve enemiga de nuestra ropa y piel si se nos ocurre recostarnos de una pared pintada con ese producto. Pintar con este material alcalino requiere de una preparación para lograr mejorar la adherencia, buen acabado y durabilidad. Pintar con la cal sola no es recomendable por las desventajas anteriores que he mencionado y no queremos eso, verdad?.

Para preparar pintura a base de cal utilicé los siguientes ingredientes:

- 2 kilos de cal

- 10 litros de agua

- 500 grs de sal

- De 3 a 5 pencas de sábila

- 1 cucharada de tilosa

- 1 cucharada de detergente en polvo (opcional)

- Una brocha (para pintar paredes lisas)

- Un cepillo de escoba (para paredes corrugadas)

- Un tobo de capacidad 10 litros

Primero, agregamos los 10 litros de agua en un tobo, una cucharada de tilosa, 500 grs de sal y el cristal de la sábila cortados en cubos. Mezclamos. Luego, agregamos la cal, el detergente y volvemos a mezclar. No se comienza a pintar enseguida, esta mezcla se deja macerando mínimo 2 días, puede ser más, entre más días mejor. La función de la sábila es mejorar tanto la adherencia a la pared como facilitar el desliz de la brocha, además de evitar que manche y la pintura se agriete. Con la sal, la pintura seca más rápido y también ayuda con la adherencia a la pared. La tilosa es para mejorar la consistencia, que la mezcla quede espese, algo que incide positivamente en la durabilidad. El detergente es solo para que haya algo de espuma, por eso puse que es opcional. Para la pared lisa, utilicé una brocha, mientras que para el retoque del frente y la pared lateral que es rugosa se utilizó el cepillo de escoba.

### Hablemos de los costos

Muy importante, hablar de cuanto nos ahorramos. Un saco de cal cuesta 6$ y trae 8 kilos. Con dos kilos de cal se preparan 10 litros de pintura, lo que significa que con un saco de 8 kilos se obtienen 40 litros. Con 10 litros de pintura a base cal logré pintar 13 m2, dos aplicaciones (26 m2) y 19 m2 una sola aplicación, en total fueron 45 m2. En cambio, 1 galón equivale a 3,78 litros y se pueden pintar de 30 a 40 m2, una sola aplicación. Se puede usar pintura clase B, para exteriores e interiores, el costo oscila entre los 10$. Esto significa que con 2 kilos de cal (preparación de 10 litros), puedo pintar 32 m2, una sola aplicación, con el saco de cal (preparación de 40 litros), puedo pintar 128 m2 aproximadamente. En cambio, si utilizo pintura convencional, para pintar 32 m2, necesitaría 1 galón (10$, precio referencia) y para 128 m2, necesitaría un poco más de 4 galones (aproximadamente 40$, para una sola aplicación).

Si usamos cal y sacamos el costo para la pared de 128m2, el costo sería, 6$ por la cal (8 kilos), la tilosa 3$ (50 grs) y la sal (4 kilos, cada uno valorado en 0,69$), para un total de 11,76$, para dos aplicaciones serán, 23,52$. La sábila la tengo en casa y el detergente es opcional. Además del bajo costo, obtendríamos una pintura ecológica. Espero que esta publicación le sea de su agrado y ayude en su economía.

Gallons of paint are quite expensive, of course, depending on the brand. To give my home a little TLC, I started with a couple of gallons of class A exterior white paint, which was enough to paint only the front of the house, but only one coat. Each one cost $20, and for the number of square meters, I had to buy two more gallons to improve the finish, which was quite expensive just to paint the front.

To make matters worse, the walls of the porch were quite ugly, stained, and since it was a large house, the cost of painting them would be quite high due to the number of gallons I would have to buy. That's when a cousin told me that one alternative for painting walls is to use lime, which leaves everything nice and white and is quite inexpensive. However, there are several considerations to take into account when painting with lime. Lime has the disadvantage of poor adhesion, especially on smooth walls, and it also tends to stain, so it becomes the enemy of our clothes and skin if we happen to lean against a wall painted with this product. Painting with this alkaline material requires preparation to improve adhesion, finish, and durability. Painting with lime alone is not recommended due to the disadvantages I mentioned above, and we don't want that, right?.

To prepare lime-based paint, I used the following ingredients:

- 2 kilograms of lime

- 10 liters of water

- 500 grams of salt

- 3 to 5 aloe vera leaves

- 1 tablespoon of tilosa

- 1 tablespoon of powdered detergent (optional)

- A brush (for painting smooth walls)

- A broom brush (for corrugated walls)

- A 10-liter bucket

First, add 10 liters of water to a bucket, along with a tablespoon of tilosa, 500 grams of salt, and the aloe vera crystal cut into cubes. Mix together. Then add the lime and detergent and mix again. Do not start painting right away; this mixture should be left to macerate for at least two days, or longer if possible—the longer, the better. The aloe vera improves adhesion to the wall and makes it easier to apply with a brush, as well as preventing smudging and cracking. The salt helps the paint dry faster and also improves adhesion to the wall. The tilosa improves consistency, thickening the mixture, which has a positive effect on durability. The detergent is just to create some foam, which is why I said it is optional. For the smooth wall, I used a brush, while for touching up the front and side walls, which are rough, I used a broom brush.

### Let's talk about costs

It is very important to talk about how much we save. A bag of lime costs $6 and weighs 8 kilograms. Two kilograms of lime can be used to make 10 liters of paint, which means that an 8-kilogram bag can make 40 liters. With 10 liters of lime-based paint, I was able to paint 13 m², two coats (26 m²), and 19 m² with a single coat, for a total of 45 m². In contrast, 1 gallon is equivalent to 3.78 liters and can paint 30 to 40 m² with a single coat. Class B paint can be used for exteriors and interiors, and the cost ranges from $10. This means that with 2 kilos of lime (10-liter preparation), I can paint 32 m2 with a single application, and with the bag of lime (40-liter preparation), I can paint approximately 128 m2. On the other hand, if I use conventional paint, to paint 32 m2, I would need 1 gallon ($10, reference price), and for 128 m2, I would need a little more than 4 gallons (approximately $40, for a single application).

If we use lime and calculate the cost for a 128m2 wall, the cost would be $6 for the lime (8 kilos), $3 for the tilosa (50 grams), and $0.69 for each of the four kilos of salt, for a total of $11.76. For two applications, the cost would be $23.52. I have aloe vera at home, and the detergent is optional. In addition to the low cost, we would obtain an eco-friendly paint.
