Todos en algún momento hemos estado frente a situaciones que nos sobrepasan, sintiendo que ya no podemos dar un paso más, queriendo tirar todo por la borda, quizás porque no nos sentimos capaces, porque perdemos la motivación, o porque hay instantes en lo que todo parece perder sentido. A veces parece que el esfuerzo, no vale la recompensa y a veces es cierto, pero para saberlo, debemos saber qué queremos realmente. Cambiar de rumbo no está mal, cuando estás redireccionando tus pasos hacia algo que te favorece, pero cuidado, no debemos dejarnos engañar y usas esto como pretexto ante cualquier obstáculo. La vida es bella, pero nadie dijo que fuera fácil y casi siempre, por no decir siempre, requiere fortaleza, determinación, constancia, perseverancia y toda nuestra fuerza de voluntad, para alcanzar lo que realmente queremos, eso que nos llena el alma. Estaba en la universidad, había reprobado dos veces fisicoquímica, sentía que me tomaba mucho esfuerzo pasar las materias. En la escuela primaria y secundaria siempre fui sobresaliente, pude regalarle a mis padres el orgullo de ser una buena estudiante y tener un buen promedio. Todo lo entendía con facilidad y no tenía que estudiar mucho para mis exámenes. Todo me parecía tan fácil. En la universidad, intente hacer lo mismo y aunque de igual forma entendía las clases, el contenido no abarcaba todo lo que debía saber para un examen. Fue difícil para mí enfrentarme a esta nueva realidad: Debía estudiar mucho más. Entonces lo hice, pero no fue suficiente, la ingeniería conlleva números de principio a fin, resolvía ejercicios que a mi parecer estaban bien, pero no era así; entonces descubrí que tenía otra debilidad que superar: Debía estudiar en grupo, yo que siempre lo hacía sola.

I was in college, I had failed twice in physics and chemistry, I felt that it took me a lot of effort to pass my subjects. In elementary and high school I was always outstanding, I was able to give my parents the pride of being a good student and having a good average. Everything was easy to understand and I didn't have to study hard for my exams. Everything seemed so easy. In college, I tried to do the same thing and although I understood the lectures, the content did not cover everything I needed to know for an exam. It was hard for me to face this new reality: I had to study a lot more. So I did, but it was not enough, engineering involves numbers from beginning to end, I solved exercises that I thought were fine, but it was not so; then I discovered that I had another weakness to overcome: I had to study in a group, I who always did it alone.

El ciclo básico, que fue donde pasé el tiempo en ensayo y error, fue una pesadilla para mí. Es un golpe al ego, pasar de ser la mejor, a reprobar materias, sentí que había perdido el control y eso para mí es agobiante. Tenía vergüenza con mis padres por no aprobar todas mis materias. Apenas estaba comenzando la carrera, no me sentí suficiente para continuar y pensé en cambiarme de carrera. Estudié en la Universidad de Oriente, donde también se podía estudiar administración de empresas, pensé que cambiarme sería buena opción para mí, me consolaba pensando que es una carrera que tiene bastante campo laboral. Total, yo ni siquiera había elegido la carrera que estaba cursando (ingeniería de petróleo), me decía. Tenía muchas formas de justificarme para salir corriendo.

The basic cycle, where I spent my time in trial and error, was a nightmare for me. It is a blow to the ego, going from being the best, to failing subjects, I felt I had lost control and that for me is overwhelming. I was embarrassed with my parents for not passing all my subjects. I was just starting my career, I didn't feel I was good enough to continue and I thought about changing careers. I studied at the Universidad de Oriente, where you could also study business administration, I thought that changing would be a good option for me, I consoled myself by thinking that it is a career that has a lot of job opportunities. I had not even chosen the career I was studying (petroleum engineering), I told myself. I had many ways to justify myself to run away.

¿Qué paso entonces? Apenas estaba comenzando mi noviazgo con un chico que estudiaba la misma carrera que yo, en resumen, me convenció de que me quedara y me apoyó en todo lo que pudo. Sí, el mérito de no irme en ese momento no fue mío, creo que fue Dios guiando mi camino. Entonces me uní a un buen grupo de estudios, me quedaba todo el día en la universidad tanto en clases, como estudiando en las horas libres, todos los días, de 7 A.M. a 7 P.M., hora en la que tomaba el transporte para ir a casa. Incluso almorzaba en el comedor de la universidad. Me acostumbré a esa rutina y se volvió algo natural para mí. Entonces comencé a aprobar todas las materias y ustedes no tienen idea lo que eso significó para mí.

What happened then? I was just starting my engagement with a guy who was studying the same career as me, in short, he convinced me to stay and supported me in everything he could. Yes, the merit of not leaving at that time was not mine, I think it was God guiding my path. Then I joined a good study group, I stayed all day at the university both in classes and studying in the free hours, every day, from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M., time when I took the transportation to go home. I even ate lunch at the university dining hall. I got used to that routine and it became natural for me. Then I started passing all my subjects and you have no idea what that meant to me.

Pero ¿Cuál era la lectura si yo salía corriendo de mis responsabilidades? Dejar atrás algo con lo que no pude e irme a la opción más fácil, no es sólo eso, también se traduce en no fortalecerme frente a las dificultades y aprender a huir a los obstáculos, dejando todo a medio comenzar. Estoy convencida de que eso es así. Cuando finalmente encontré la fórmula que me permitiría alcanzar mi título en ingeniería, me sentí super poderosa, en serio sentí que podía lograr todo lo que me propusiera. No rendirme y superar mis miedos, me hizo una persona más confiada, más fuerte, más capaz. Cada victoria es la evidencia de que podemos sorprendernos a nosotros mismos, sólo si no desfallecemos. Con el tiempo, esa confianza crece como una bola de nieve y entendemos que cada traspié, sólo nos está indicando que probemos otra manera. En conclusión, siempre aprendemos.

Leaving behind something I couldn't handle and going for the easiest option is not only that, it also translates into not getting stronger in the face of difficulties and learning to run away from obstacles, leaving everything half started. I am convinced that this is the case. When I finally found the formula that would allow me to achieve my engineering degree, I felt super powerful, I really felt that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Not giving up and overcoming my fears made me a more confident, stronger, more capable person. Every victory is evidence that we can surprise ourselves, only if we don't falter. Over time, that confidence grows like a snowball and we understand that every setback is just telling us to try another way. In conclusion, we always learn.
