One of the last things we did before emigrating to the Philippines was to visit the GONDWANA, a natural history museum in Schiffweiler, Saarland.

The dimensions of this exhibition, which deals with the history of the earth from the origin of life to the way of life of early humans, are quite impressive: 21 realistically designed prehistoric worlds are presented to visitors over an area of 10,000 square metres.
This site map provides an overview of the entire facility.

The entrance fees are not exactly low, but in my opinion justified, as both, children and adults, are offered a lot of interesting information and entertainment.

Eine der letzten Unternehmungen vor unserer Auswanderung auf die Philippinen war der Besuch des GONDWANA eines naturgeschichtlichen Museums im saarländischen Schiffweiler.

Die Ausmaße dieser sich mit der Erdgeschichte von der Entstehung des Lebens bis hin zu der Lebensweise früher Menschen befassenden Ausstellung sind durchaus beachtlich: Auf 10000 Quadratmetern präsentieren sich dem Besucher 21 realistisch gestaltete Urzeitwelten.

Die Eintrittspreise sind zwar nicht gerade niedrig, m. E. jedoch durchaus gerechtfertigt, da sowohl Kindern als auch Erwachsenen so Einiges an interessanten Informationen, aber auch Unterhaltung geboten wird.

Inside the Prehistoricum, the gigantic, absolutely impressive reconstruction of the skeleton of an Argentinosaurus immediately catches the eye. At up to 40 metres long, these giants were among the largest animals that ever existed on earth.

At this point, I have to digress for a moment and make a plea in favour of the prehistoric lizards: all too often, for example as a result of company bankruptcies, I read sentences like "The decline occurred, as with the dinosaurs back then, due to a lack of flexibility and insufficient adaptability to changing circumstances." The dinosaurs populated the planet for around 165 million years, produced an enormous variety of species and dominated the world on land, at sea and in the air until, besides other factors like intense volcanism, a meteorite impact put an end to their existence (although some of today's reptiles and, above all, birds are regarded as their descendants). They were more intelligent than long thought (exactly how intelligent is still a matter of debate).
Homo sapiens has existed for around 300,000 years only, and already now we are threatening our own existence through wars and environmental destruction. So we should wait before making fun of the dinosaurs' alleged lack of adaptability at least for the next 200 million years - provided we are still around then and haven't long since been knocked out of the 'great game of evolution' by then. :)

An dieser Stelle muss ich kurz abschweifen und ein Plädoyer für die Urzeitechsen einlegen: Nur allzu oft lese ich, z. B. infolge von Firmenpleiten, Sätze wie "Der Niedergang erfolgte, wie damals bei den Dinosauriern, aufgrund fehlender Flexibilität und mangelndem Anpassungsvermögen an die sich verändernden Umstände." Die Dinosaurier bevölkerten den Planeten ca. 165 Millionen Jahre lang, brachten einen enormen Artenreichtum hervor und dominierten das Weltgeschehen zu Lande, zu Wasser und in der Luft, bis, neben anderen Faktoren, wie z. B. starkem Vulkanismus, ein Meteoriteneinschlag ihrem Dasein ein Ende setze (wobei einige heutige Reptilien und vor allem die Vögel als ihre Nachkommen gelten). Dabei waren sie intelligenter als man lange Zeit dachte (darüber, wie intelligent genau, wird noch gestritten).
Homo sapiens existiert seit ca. 300000 Jahren, und schon jetzt bedrohen wir unsere eigene Existenz durch Kriege und Umweltzerstörung. Über die angeblich mangelnde Anpassungsfähigkeit der Dinosaurier sollten wir uns also frühestens in 200 Millionen Jahren lustig machen - sofern es uns dann noch gibt und wir bis dahin nicht schon längst aus dem 'großen Spiel der Evolution' herausgekegelt wurden. :)

Reproduced skeleton of a Dimetrodon that populated the earth almost 300 million years ago in the early Permian period. This predatory species, up to 3.20 metres long and weighing 250 kilograms, belonged to the synapsida, which are considered to have some similarities to mammals.

It wasn't my intention to reflect myself so strongly in the glass pane in front of the Apatosaurus bone, but at least it impressively illustrates its gigantic size. :)

This could be a reproduction of extremely well-preserved specimens of the Hadrosauroidea family, although I'm not sure. I have asked the Prehistoricum by e-mail, but have not yet received any reply.

Hierbei könnte es sich um die Nachbildung extrem gut erhaltener Exemplare der Familie Hadrosauroidea handeln, wobei ich mir da nicht sicher bin. Ich habe per E-Mail beim Prähistoricum nachgefragt, aber bisher noch keine Antwort erhalten.

We are now in the Cretaceous, a period spanning 145 to 66 million years before our time, the end of which is characterised by a mass extinction including the demise of the dinosaurs.

The appearance of the Ceratopsidae (horned faces) was typical of this period in the Earth's history. One bizarre-looking representative of this dinosaur family was the Diabloceratus (the "devilish horned face"), whose replicated skull and illustration can be seen in the photo below.

Wir befinden uns nun in der einen Zeitraum von 145 bis 66 Millionen Jahren vor unserer Zeit umfassenden Kreide, deren Ende durch ein Massenaussterben samt Untergang der Dinosaurier geprägt ist.

Typisch für diesen Zeitabschnitt der Erdgeschichte war das Auftreten der Ceratopsidae (Horngesichter).
Ein bizarr wirkender Vertreter dieser Saurierfamilie war der Diabloceratus (das "teuflische Horngesicht"), dessen nachgebildeter Schädel und Abbildung auf dem Foto unten zu sehen sind.

Well, you guess it already, this is a massive, awe-inspiring reproduced skull of a Tyrannosaurus rex. The teeth of the living version of the dinosaur, which reached a length of up to 18 centimetres, were replaced after being lost. According to computer models, the bite force of a Tyrannosaurus was up to 34522 newtons, while tooth pressures of up to 2974 megapascals should have been possible.
With a length of 13 metres, it was not the largest, but certainly one of the most dangerous predators of its time and probably the most well-known dinosaur ever.

Nun, ihr ahnt es bereits, das ist ein massiver, furchteinflößender nachgebildeter Schädel eines Tyrannosaurus rex. Die bis zu 18 Zentimeter langen Zähne wurden bei der lebenden Version des Dinosauriers nach Verlust wieder ersetzt. Gemäß Computermodellen betrug die Beißkraft eines Tyrannosaurus bis zu 34522 Newton, während Zahndrücke von bis zu 2974 Megapascal möglich gewesen sein sollten.
Mit einer Länge von 13 Metern war er zwar nicht das größte, aber sicherlich eines der gefährlichsten Raubtiere seiner Zeit und vermutlich der bekannteste Dinosaurier überhaupt.

After bidding the Tyrannosaurus a relieved farewell and thinking we had overcome the worst, we were suddenly confronted by a mirror - from which the most terrifying predator of all time was staring back at us: real Homo sapiens!

The GONDWANA dinosaur show takes place in a 14 metres high, 1500 square metres wide, true-to-life landscape setting in which the digitally animated prehistoric giants Titanosaurus (whose genus is considered "dubious", however), Giganotosaurus and Aucasaurus come into conflict with each other.

Next, we went on a 'time travel' (with "Z.E.R.A. - die Zeitexpress Reiseagentur") through various stages of human history, such as the Middle Ages, Egypt 3400 years ago and to various ancestors of today's humans.

When looking at the first picture in particular, it occurred to me that we may have developed rapidly in terms of technology, but not so much in our interpersonal dealings with one another ...

Als nächstes unternahmen wir eine 'Zeitreise' (mit "Z.E.R.A. – die Zeitexpress Reiseagentur") durch verschiedene Stationen der Menschheitsgeschichte, wie z. B. das Mittelalter, Ägypten vor 3400 Jahren und zu diversen Vorfahren des heutigen Menschen.

Vor allem beim Betrachten des ersten Bildes kam mir in den Sinn, dass wir uns zwar in technologischer Hinsicht durchaus rapide weiterentwickelt haben mögen - im zwischenmenschlichen Umgang miteinander aber eher weniger ...

At our last stop, armed with 3D glasses, we sat opposite the window pane of a "maximum security unit", which an animated Otodus megalodon caused to shatter by headbutting.

This 18-metre-long gigantic shark, which still existed five million years ago, had teeth up to 18 cm long and a biting force around ten times greater than that of a 'great white shark' (Carcharodon carcharias).

Auf unserer letzten Station saßen wir, mit 3D-Brillen bewaffnet, der Scheibe eines "Hochsicherheitstrakts" gegenüber, die ein animierter Otodus megalodon mittels Kopfstößen zum Zersplittern brachte.

Dieser 18 Meter lange, noch vor fünf Millionen Jahren lebende Riesenhai hatte mit seinen bis zu 18 cm langen Zähnen eine ca. zehnmal größere Beißkraft als ein 'Weißer Hai' (Carcharodon carcharias).
