Where to start? Let's begin by saying that these have been the worst days of my life, so much so that at this moment, where the worst is finally over and I have let go of the enormous tension accumulated in the past few days, I feel completely drained of every bit of energy. However, I want to tell you what happened and why I suddenly disappeared. That's why I'm sorry for not having replied to all the dear comments received in the last posts, but my mind was completely devastated and elsewhere. As you may have guessed, it's about our beloved Shyla, whom many know as the protagonist in many of my posts, but let's start from the beginning. In the first two weeks of April, Giovanna and I were assisting @giovi86's mother, who had a problem with her knee, and we helped her with visits and therapies to recover her leg. When we reached a good point in her recovery, I had returned to posting with the intention of writing and commenting daily and being able to share our explorations together with Shyla, especially with the arrival of the beautiful season. So on Wednesday, April 12th, we were all supposed to meet at our house to say goodbye to Giovanna's mother, who would return to Sardinia the next day. It was still afternoon, and with a few free hours, I turned on my PC to reply to comments and write a new post about Monte Berico that we had visited on Easter Monday when suddenly my phone rang and it was my mother all worried because she had found Shyla collapsed in a corner when she came back from work. She was awake but not moving and seemed to be in a lot of pain... I immediately had a warning bell go off because two days before, I was in the garden playing with her with the ball, and she was jumping around like a grasshopper and was perfectly fine. So I immediately ran to my mother's house to personally check on Shyla's condition, which continued to remain still and in pain. When I arrived, I immediately noticed that Shyla had a swollen belly, and my first concern was a twisted stomach, an abnormal movement of the stomach that affects adult dogs and if not treated promptly, causes death. I immediately called the vet and explained the symptoms and he also thought it was the same problem. He told me that he could not handle the situation and that I had to go to a specialized clinic for dogs. He gave me a couple of names and told me to run there immediately. I didn't waste a second, and my mother and I quickly loaded Shyla into the car and headed to the nearest clinic. However, they callously informed us that they were too busy with other urgent cases and couldn't help us, without even bothering to examine the dog. I won't mention their name because they don't deserve to be acknowledged. I was stunned and speechless, but thinking that it also happens in hospitals with people, who often don't even consider you even if you're about to die in Italy, it's not so surprising and I speak from personal experience.

>Da dove iniziare? Partiamo con il dire che sono stati i giorni peggiori della mia vita, tanto che in questo momento, dove finalmente il peggio è passato e ho lasciato andare l'enorme tensione accumulata nei scorsi giorni, mi sento completamente svuotato da ogni energia, ma voglio raccontarvi cos'è accaduto e perchè tutto ad un tratto mi sono assentato. Per questo mi dispiace non aver risposto a tutti i carissimi commenti ricevuti negli ultimi post, ma la mia mente era completamente sconvolta e altrove. Come potete aver intuito si tratta della nostra amatissima Shyla, che molti conoscono essendo protagonista in tanti miei post, ma partiamo dall'inizio. >Io e Giovanna nelle prime due settimane di Aprile, stavamo assistendo la madre di @giovi86, che aveva un problema ad un ginocchio e l'abbiamo aiutata con le visite e a fare le terapie per recuperare la gamba. Arrivati ad un buon punto del suo recupero, ero tornato a pubblicare con l'intento di tornare a scrivere e commentare con frequenza giornaliera e poter riprendere a condividere le nostre esplorazioni insieme a Shyla, complice anche l'arrivo della bella stagione. Così mercoledì 12 Aprile, dovevamo trovarci tutti a casa nostra per salutare la mamma di Giovanna, che il giorno seguente sarebbe tornata in Sardegna. Era ancora pomeriggio e con qualche ora libera, avevo acceso il PC per rispondere ai commenti e scrivere un nuovo post riguardo Monte Berico che avevamo visitato il Lunedì di Pasquetta, quando ad un tratto mi squilla il telefono ed era mia madre tutta preoccupata, perchè tornata da lavoro aveva trovato Shyla accasciata in un angolo, era sveglia ma non si muoveva e sembrava molto sofferente... >Ebbi subito un campanello di allarme, perchè due giorni prima ero in giardino con lei che giocavamo con il pallone e saltava come una cavalletta e stava benissimo. Così corsi subito a casa di mia madre per controllare di persona le condizioni di Shyla, che continuava a rimanere ferma e dolorante. Quando arrivai, notai subito che Shyla aveva la pancia gonfia e la mia prima preoccupazione fu una torsione dello stomaco, un movimento anomalo dello stomaco stesso che colpisce i cani adulti e se non trattato tempestivamente ne causa la morte. Ho chiamato subito il veterinario e gli ho spiegato i sintomi e anche lui pensava allo stesso problema, mi disse che lui non avrebbe potuto gestire la cosa e che sarei dovuto andare in una clinica specializzata per cani, mi diede un paio di nomi e mi disse di correre subito la. >Non persi un secondo e con mia madre caricammo Shyla in auto e ci dirigemmo presso la clinica più vicina, la quale, ignobilmente ci liquidò che erano pieni di lavoro e urgenze e non potevano aiutarci, senza neanche guardare il cane, ma non voglio fare nomi, non meritano neanche di essere menzionati. We rushed to the Clinica Veterinaria Pedrani, where they immediately helped us by performing X-rays, blood tests, and ultrasounds on Shyla, even staying well beyond their normal hours. The results of these tests ruled out a stomach torsion but revealed two ulcers in Shyla's intestines, one small and one large that had perforated, explaining the reason for her sudden illness. After explaining the problem to us, the veterinarian who examined Shyla informed us that she needed to be hospitalized as her condition could rapidly deteriorate due to peritonitis caused by the perforation in her intestine. The next morning, Shyla was scheduled for an MRI and would be examined by a surgeon to determine the cause of this event and how to save her life. The night of April 12th, we all spent the night sleepless, worried and confused about what was happening to our beloved Shyla. At 4 am, I was already awake, unable to stay calm as time seemed to pass too slowly. I continued to stare at the phone, waiting for the surgeon's call. At 10 am, the phone finally rang, and it was the veterinarian, Dr. Alberto Coltro, whom I name out of respect, who explained the situation to me. Shyla had a tumor in her intestine that hadn't caused any problems until it perforated and started leaking material into her abdomen, making it impossible to detect earlier. The tumor was located near the pancreas, the worst possible location, as it is the most delicate and inflammable organ in the body. He continued to explain that the margin for a successful operation was very narrow, and it would be a complicated surgery with a survival rate not exceeding 70%, only because Shyla was still strong and had just turned 8 years old. At this point, the situation was between five days of life in those conditions or a costly operation with uncertain outcomes. Of course, I didn't hesitate for a second, even though I didn't have all the money needed for the surgery. I would have sold a kidney to be able to embrace our Shyla once again.

>A questo punto non ho perso neanche tempo e discutere, la priorità era Shyla e sono corso nell'altra clinica che mi era stata indicata, che tra l'altro sarebbe stata la prima scelta del mio veterinario, perchè sono considerati i migliori della zona, ma per tempestività avevo prima optato per la più vicina. Così una volta raggiunta la Clinica Veterinaria Pedrani, abbiamo chiesto aiuto e ci hanno subito assistiti in pochi minuti, facendo prima i raggi, analisi del sangue e successivamente l'ecografia a Shyla, rimanendo ad assisterci ben oltre il normale orario. L'esito di questi primi esami aveva scongiurato la torsione dello stomaco, ma non aveva portato buone notizie, perchè nell'intestino di Shyla si vedevano due ulcere una più piccola e una grande che si era perforata, che spiegava il motivo del suo malessere improvviso. Dopo queste prime analisi, la dottoressa che l'aveva visitata ci spiego il problema e che Shyla doveva rimanere ricoverata perchè le sue condizioni potevano peggiorare drasticamente in poco tempo a causa della peritonite dovuta alla perforazione dell'intestino e che la mattina seguente sarebbe stata sottoposta a risonanza magnetica e visitata dal chirurgo per capire i motivi di questo evento e come poter intervenire per salvare il cane. >La notte del 12 Aprile la passammo tutti insonne, preoccupati e confusi per quello che stava improvvisamente accadendo alla nostra amata Shyla. Alle 4 di mattina ero già in piedi perchè non riuscivo a stare calmo, il tempo non passava e continuavo a fissare il telefono, aspettando la chiamata del chirurgo. Alle 10 il telefono squilla ed era il veterinario, il Dr. Alberto Coltro, che nomino per stima, che mi spiegò la situazione... In pratica Shyla aveva un tumore all'intestino, che non gli aveva dato problemi finchè non si è perforato ed è iniziato a fuoriuscire materiale per la pancia, per questo non era stato possibile accorgersene prima. Continuò spiegandomi che si trovava in prossimità del Pancreas, il punto peggiore dove poteva formarsi, perchè il pancreas è l'organo più delicato ed infiammabile di tutto il sistema, continuando a dire che il margine pulito su cui operare era molto ristretto e che sarebbe stata un'operazione molto complicata sia durante l'intervento, che per il successivo recupero con una probabilità di sopravvivenza non oltre il 70%, solo perchè il cane è in forze e ha ancora un'età dove può recuperare, 8 anni appena compiuti. La situazione a quel punto stava tra 5 giorni di vita in quelle condizioni o un operazione costosissima con esiti non certi... Our dog Shyla was undergoing surgery, and we were afraid that we might lose her suddenly forever. It was a terrible day spent in nervous tears and so much tension, but I wanted to see it differently from the curse that seems to haunt me. I looked at it from another perspective, as if the fact that her intestine did not completely perforate, causing Shyla's death, allowed us to operate on her and still have hope that she could come back to us. While Shyla was under the knife, the hours seemed endless, time had completely stopped, and I was unable to do anything because every thought was directed towards her. I waited sitting in a chair in the kitchen while Giovanna and my mother went to work but continued to write to me for updates on our little girl. Eventually, in the evening, the doctor called me and gave me an update on the situation, saying that the operation went well but was more complicated than expected. Nevertheless, the dog was stable, and now we only had to wait for the passing of more endless hours...

>Tutto questo accadeva il 13 Aprile, il giorno del mio 33° compleanno, ovviamente ha vinto il record per peggior compleanno in assoluto della mia vita, con la nostra Shyla sotto i ferri dell'operazione e con la paura di poterla perdere per sempre così improvvisamente. Una giornata terribile passata tra pianto nervoso e tanta tensione, ma che ho voluto vedere in modo diverso dalla maledizione che sembra perseguitarmi, guardando il tutto da un altro punto di vista, come se il fatto che l'intestino non si sia completamente perforato causando in quel caso la morte di Shyla, abbiamo potuto operarla e avere ancora la speranza che lei potesse tornare da noi. >Mentre la nostra Shyla era sotto i ferri, le ore sembravano infinite, il tempo si era completamente fermato ed ero incapace di fare qualsiasi cosa, perchè ogni pensiero era rivolto a lei e aspettavo seduto in una sedia nella cucina, mentre Giovanna e mia madre erano andate a lavoro, ma continuavano a scrivermi se avevo notizie della nostra piccolina... So, they asked if we could come and give her the special food they provided us with. Of course, we immediately said yes, we couldn't wait to hug our little girl. When we arrived at the clinic, they took us to a room where they brought us our Shyla and some gastrointestinal food that she would have to eat to help her intestines move again. In eight years, Shyla had never been away from us for even half a day. After spending two days in the clinic, she was down, not only because of the operation, but as soon as she saw us, she was overjoyed, and the main problem became keeping her calm and still because she had just been completely opened up and could not make any sudden movements. We immediately lay down on the floor with her to prevent her from moved too much or jumped. They left us together with her for more than an hour to cuddle and spend time together until the doctor arrived to talk to us and take her away for exams and an IV. My first words after greeting him were, "Doctor, I see her well. Can we be calm?" His answer was not yes, but rather he said that dogs are always like that just after surgery, and we should not rejoice yet because the most challenging part is yet to come. He explained that the crucial days when problems could arise were the third, fourth, and fifth days, where the intestine that resumes movement could break if the body did not respond to the surgery, and at that point, it was not always possible to intervene again with surgery. That was the situation, practically a Russian roulette. With a new dose of anxiety and tension, we went back home, hoping that those five days would pass quickly. But we had hope in our hearts that Shyla, with her strength and will to live, would overcome even this terrible obstacle. The following day was Saturday and since we were both free, @giovi86 and I spent the entire afternoon with her because she needed to have some IV fluids and we were told that if we wanted, we could stay in a room with her and comfort her. However, that day was not at all happy because the first problems had arisen, her intestines were not moving, and she continued to produce gastric juices and vomit. We lost count of how many times we cleaned up her vomit that day. Shyla was very dejected and a bit confused by everything that was happening, to the point that I couldn't even leave the room to go to the bathroom because she would get too agitated. We were very tense and scared that day because if she couldn't eat and keep the food down to get her intestines moving again, it would be a serious problem. However, thanks to the fluids, she slowly started to feel better and had fewer episodes of vomiting.

>A metà mattinata del giorno seguente, il 14 Aprile, mi richiamò la clinica, dicendomi che Shyla si era svegliata ed era tranquilla, ma doveva mangiare e non accettava il cibo da loro, così ci chiesero se potevamo andare noi a darle del cibo apposito che ci avrebbero fornito loro. Ovviamente è stato un si immediato, non vedevamo l'ora di poter abbracciare la nostra piccolina. Così, giunti in clinica, ci accompagnarono in uno studio dove ci portarono la nostra Shyla e un po' di cibo gastrointestinale, che avrebbe dovuto mangiare per aiutare l'intestino a muoversi nuovamente. In 8 anni Shyla non era mai stata distante da noi neanche per mezza giornata, dopo aver passato due giorni in clinica era abbattuta e non solo per l'operazione, ma appena ci vide, fu felicissima e il problema principale diventò tenerla ferma e buona, perchè era appena stata aperta completamente e non poteva fare nessun movimento brusco, così ci siamo distesi subito a terra con lei per evitare che si muovesse forte o saltasse. Ci hanno lasciato più di un'ora insieme a lei, per coccolarla e stare un po' insieme, finchè non arrivò il dottore per parlarci e prelevarla perchè doveva andare a fare degli esami e una flebo. Le mie prime parole dopo il saluto, furono “Dottore, la vedo bene, possiamo stare sereni?”, la sua risposta non fu un si, anzi, disse che i cani sono sempre così appena operati e non bisogna esultare ora, perchè la parte più difficile deve ancora arrivare, spiegandoci che i giorni cruciali, dove possono sorgere i problemi sono il 3°,4° e 5° giorno, dove solitamente l'intestino che riprende a muoversi potrebbe rompersi se il corpo non ha risposto all'operazione e a quel punto non è sempre possibile intervenire nuovamente con la chirurgia... >La situazione era quella, una roulette Russa praticamente, con una nuova bella dose di ansia e tensione siamo tornati a casa, sperando che quei 5 giorni passassero velocemente. Ma avevamo nel nostro cuore la speranza, che Shyla con la sua forza e voglia di vivere avrebbe superato anche questo terribile ostacolo. >Il giorno seguente, era sabato ed essendo entrambi liberi, io e @giovi86 siamo stati con lei tutto il pomeriggio, perchè doveva fare delle flebo e ci avevano detto che se volevamo ci mettevano in una stanza e stavamo la con lei a coccolarla. Ma quel giorno non è stato per niente felice, perchè erano sorti i primi problemi, l'intestino non si muoveva e lei continuava a produrre succhi gastrici e vomitare, abbiamo perso il conto di tutte le volte che abbiamo pulito il suo vomito quel giorno. Shyla era molto abbattuta e un po' confusa da tutto quello che stava accadendo, tanto che non potevo uscire dalla stanza neanche per andare in bagno, perchè si agitava troppo. We could only take her out to do her business for a small walk to greet her and try to help her defecate, which she did, and it was already a good sign because it meant that her intestines had started moving again. However, the critical days to be able to breathe a sigh of relief were still to come; it was still too early to sing victory. Fortunately, and thanks to Shyla's will and the attentive care of the veterinary clinic, she started feeling better in the following days, without any further vomiting episodes, and starting to eat small meals. At that point, we would have been able to assess the situation because her intestines had returned to normal movement, and the question mark was on the strength of the intestinal sutures where an entire piece of intestine had been removed. We visited Shyla every day to comfort her and let her know that we had not abandoned her. We spent about 2 or 3 hours with her every day, took her out to do her physical needs, and gave her a little boiled chicken. These small gestures were important to her because seeing us every day kept her calm and she knew we were there for her. I also believe that for a dog who cannot understand why they are confined in a clinic, especially if they have spent every day of their life with their family and sleeping next to them, it is somehow traumatic when they are suffering physically. These critical days passed without further problems, and in the daily checks they did on her intestines, everything was correctly in place. Luckily, the sutures had healed well, and the intestinal movement was normal.

>Così il giorno successivo, per evitare che si agitasse e continuasse a vomitare, visto che aveva passato una mattinata tranquilla, i veterinari ci avevano suggerito di non passare il giorno insieme a Shyla, ma abbiamo potuto solamente portarla a fare i bisogni, giusto il tempo di una piccola passeggiata per salutarla e cercare di farla defecare, che così fu ed era già un buon segno, perchè significava che l'intestino aveva ripreso a muoversi, ma era i giorni critici per poter tirare un sospiro di sollievo erano i successivi, era ancora presto per cantare vittoria. >Per fortuna e grazie anche alla volontà di Shyla e alle attente cure delle clinica veterinaria, nei giorni seguenti ha ripreso a stare meglio, senza più episodi di vomito e iniziando a mangiare piccoli pasti. In quel momento si sarebbero tirate le somme, perchè l'intestino aveva ripreso una normale movimentazione e il punto di domanda era sulla tenuta della sutura intestinale dove era stato rimosso un pezzo intero di intestino. Siamo andati a trovare Shyla tutti i giorni, per coccolarla e farle sentire la nostra presenza e che non l'avevamo abbandonata. Passavamo ogni giorno circa 2 o 3 ore insieme a lei, la portavamo a fare i bisogni e gli davamo un po' di pollo bollito, ma questi piccoli gesti erano importanti per lei, perchè vedendoci ogni giorno rimaneva tranquilla e sapeva che noi gli eravamo vicini. Anche perchè sono convinto che per un cane che non può capire il motivo per cui rimane chiuso in clinica, con il fatto inoltre che sta soffrendo fisicamente, sia in qualche modo traumatico, sopratutto se ha passato ogni giorno della sua vita assieme alla sua famiglia e dormendo vicino a loro. After all those days of terrible anxiety and stress, we could bring our little one home and be a bit more at ease, but we had only won one battle, the main one, and there were still many challenges ahead in the coming days and in the near future, but together we would face it all. Now Shyla is home with me and @giovi86, in our apartment, she has been back for 8 days and is now much better, but there have been moments of anxiety and fear in the past few days, which I will tell you about in the next post, so as not to overdo it, also because it took me 3 days to write this, because I am taking care of Shyla 24/7, because she needs to be constantly monitored, no playing, jumping, running or sudden movements, she must not lick herself and for this she has to wear the "astronaut helmet" as I call it, at least to sleep, during the day I check her and only put it on her if she disobeys. Then she has to eat a little bit six times a day and take the pills that she obviously doesn't like, or rather it depends, sometimes it's simple, other times she stubbornly refuses, so between taking care of the house and her, having to constantly take her outside to do her physical needs, because all the pills she's taking are making her a bit upside down, I have very little time and energy left, but these efforts are paying off and our little warrior is recovering better and stronger, she would like to play, but she still has to rest for a week, until we go to remove the 50 stitches she has on her belly, then gradually we can start playing and going on our adventures again. That's all that happened in my first week of absence, I will continue the story in the next post, hoping that Shyla will always be better and that she can return as the protagonist of our adventures. Please be patient if I can't read and be present on Hive during this period, but it is still a delicate situation and I have to take care of her, but then I will return with more constancy. Dopo tutti quei giorni di terribile ansia e stress, potevamo portare a casa la nostra piccolina e stare un po' più sereni, ma avevamo vinto solo una battaglia, la principale vinta, ma ci aspettavano ancora molte sfide nei giorni seguenti e nel prossimo futuro, ma insieme avremo affrontato tutto. >Ora Shyla è casa con me e @giovi86, nel nostro appartamento, ormai è tornata da 8 giorni e ora sta molto meglio, ma non sono mancati i momenti di ansia e paura nei giorni passati, che vi racconterò nel prossimo post, per non forzare troppo, anche perchè ho impiegato 3 giorni per scrivere questo, perchè mi sto occupando di Shyla h24, perchè ha bisogno di essere controllata costantemente, niente giochi, salti, corse o movimenti bruschi, non deve leccarsi e per questo deve mettere il “casco dell'astronauta” come lo definisco io, almeno per dormire, durante il giorno la controllo e glielo metto solo se disubbidisce. Poi deve mangiare poco per 6 volte al giorno e prendere le pastiglie che ovviamente non le piace, o meglio dipende, a volte è semplice, altre si intestardisce che non vuole, per cui tra occuparmi della casa e di lei, che devo portare costantemente fuori per fare i bisogni, perchè tutte le pastiglie che sta prendendo la sfasano un po', mi rimane davvero poco tempo e poche energie, ma questi sforzi stanno ripagando e la nostra piccola guerriera sta recuperando sempre meglio e tornando in forze, vorrebbe giocare, ma deve rimanere ancora a riposo per una settimana, finché non andremo a togliere i 50 punti che ha sul ventre, poi man mano si potrà tornare a giocare e a fare le nostre esplorazioni. >Questo è tutto quello che è successo nella mia prima settimana di assenza, continuerò la storia nel prossimo post, sperando che Shyla stia sempre meglio e che possa tornare protagonista nella nostre avventure. Portate pazienza se non riesco a leggere ed essere presente su Hive in questo periodo, ma è ancora una situazione delicata e devo occuparmi di lei, ma poi tornerò con più costanza.
