Kolejną książką omawianą w ramach klubu, który gości @krolestwo jest Solaris Stanisława Lema. Jest to powieść science fiction wydana po raz pierwszy po polsku w 1961 r., a następnie wielokrotnie dodrukowywana i tłumaczona na liczne języki. Książka doczekała się też co najmniej dwóch ekranizacji — sowieckiej, wyreżyserowanej przez Andrieja Tarkowskiego, i amerykańskiej, w której zagrał George Clooney.

Kontekst

Powieść powstała kilkanaście lat po zakończeniu drugiej wojny światowej. Polska znalazła się w radzieckiej strefie wpływów, rządzili komuniści. W 1956 r. miała miejsce destalinizacja i odwilż. Twórcy zyskali większą swobodę, ale wciąż działała cenzura. Cenzorzy jednak nie traktowali fantastyki naukowej bardzo poważnie, przez co zajęcie się tym gatunkiem pozwalało ominąć ich interwencję (zob. np. recenzję książki Lem w PRL-u).

Warto tutaj też umieścić Solaris w kontekście chronologii wypraw w kosmos. Lem napisał tę powieść już po umieszczeniu na orbicie Sputnika 1 i Łajki (1957 r.), ale ukończył ją jeszcze przed lotem Gagarina (1961 r.). Nie znano też wtedy żadnej planety poza Układem Słonecznym, gdyż istnienie pierwszych potwierdzono dopiero w 1992 r.

Fabuła i struktura

Narratorem i głównym bohaterem powieści jest dr Kris Kelvin — astronauta i psycholog. Poznajemy go w momencie przybycia na tytułową planetę. Od tego momentu prowadzi narrację niejako dwutorowo: przedstawia wcześniejszą historię badań Solaris, a także relacjonuje dziwne wydarzenia, w których uczestniczy na terenie stacji badawczej.

Solaris jest bardzo nietypowym ciałem niebieskim. Orbituje dookoła układu podwójnego gwiazd. Tego typu systemy są bardzo niestabilne i nietrwałe, gdyż taka planeta albo zostanie wyrzucona w kosmos, albo zderzy się z którąś gwiazd. Solaris posiada jednak czynnik stabilizujący jej orbitę — jest to tajemniczy ocean zajmujący niemal całą jej powierzchnię.

U oceanu zaobserwowano cechy wskazujące na to, że jest organizmem żywym, a nawet rozumnym. Jedyny mieszkaniec Solaris posiada umiejętność tworzenia różnych struktur, a nawet kopii ludzi. Tworzono różne hipotezy na jego temat i usiłowano nawiązać z nim kontakt, jednak bez skutku. Z doświadczenia Kelvina i jego towarzyszy wynika jednak, że potrafi odczytywać treści zawarte w ludzkim umyśle. Jednak wszelkie jego intencje pozostają zagadką.

Pod względem struktury fabuła przypomina nieco klasyczne rozwiązania znane np. z Eneidy czy Pana Tadeusza. Bohater przybywa w miejsce akcji, potem mamy retrospekcję wyjaśniającą wcześniejszą historię, a następnie dalsze poprowadzenie fabuły aż do końca. Nie sądzę, żeby było to zamierzone naśladownictwo, a raczej wynik namysłu autora nad tym, jak zamknąć treść w logicznych ramach.

Tematy

Podstawowym tematem, który dostrzegam w tej powieści, są ograniczenia ludzkiego poznania. Człowiek spodziewa się kontaktu z istotami podobnymi do siebie, lub przynajmniej mieszczącymi się w ludzkich pojęciach. Co więcej, często projektuje na nieznanych innych swoje dobre cechy. Dzieje badań Solaris, w tym historia Kelvina, pokazują jednak naszą niegotowość na spotkanie z czymś tak od nas odmiennym jak solaryjski ocean.

Powyższe ograniczenia nie dotyczą jednak wyłącznie spraw zewnętrznych wobec człowieka, ale także samego siebie. W pewnym momencie załoga stacji postanawia przekazać oceanowi sygnał oparty na zapisie fal mózgowym Kelvina. Choć ten się godzi, to jednak obawia się, co mogą one zawierać, bo jesteśmy nieświadomi zawartości ogromnej części naszego umysłu.

Powieść ukazuje także ludzką skłonność podążania za ułudą, nawet taką, której fałszu już jesteśmy świadomi. Mam tu na myśli przede wszystkim historię Kelvina i Harey. Kelvin wiedział, że jest ona tylko fantomem, jednak się do niej przywiązał i było mu żal, gdy odeszła.

Przedstawiona przez narratora historia badań Solaris daje ciekawy wgląd w proces naukowy. Pokazuje, że nie jest to prosty wzrost, a raczej błądzenie po gąszczu hipotez, które trzeba weryfikować. Niektóre z nich okazują się ślepymi zaułkami. W przypadku oceanu jednak takie próby kończą się fiaskiem, przez co pozostaje on wielką zagadką.

Technologia i bełkot

Podczas lektury Solaris 60 lat po jej premierze rzucają się w oczy wzmianki o archaicznych już technologiach. Stacja badawcza posiada na wyposażeniu radia lampowe, które dość szybko wyparł sprzęt tranzystorowy. Znajdują się tam także papierowe książki. Choć zasadniczo nie uważam, żeby książka jako taka kiedyś stała się archaizmem, to jednak konkretny zbiór swoje waży. Obecnie dąży się do minimalizacji masy i objętości sprzętu wysyłanego w kosmos, a w przypadku misji na planetę o toksycznej atmosferze (a taką jest Solaris), priorytet zdecydowanie miałyby wszelkie urządzenia i zapasy umożliwiające przeżycie załogi.

W pewnym momencie mowa też o poszukiwaniu badacza, który eksplorował planetę w latającej maszynie. Tutaj z kolei zwróciłem uwagę na brak wzmianek o jakiejkolwiek technologii lokalizacyjnej. Nie ma mowy nawet o jakimś w miarę prostym nadajniku. Jest to ciekawe spostrzeżenie w kontekście roli radia i radaru w wczasach, gdy Lem pisał tę powieść.

Jeśli chodzi o nieistniejącą technologię, to zwróciłem uwagę na grawitron — generator pola grawitacyjnego oparty na reaktorze jądrowym. Motyw ciążenia na statkach kosmicznych powtarza się w bodaj wszystkich dziełach fantastyki naukowej poruszających temat podróży kosmicznych, jednak ziemscy uczeni chyba dalej nie mają pomysłu, jak by to zrobić.

Pojawia się też co nieco bełkotu dotyczącego natury fantomów i sposobu pozbycia się ich. Jest to kolejny nieodłączny aspekt gatunku, który czyni fantastykę naukową fantastyką. Lem skorzystał z tego, że neutrina są mało znane, a ok. 1960 r. dla większości jego czytelników byłyby w zasadzie całkowitą tajemnicą.

Podsumowanie i ocena

Tego rodzaju kwestie technologiczne są jednak wtórne względem głównego tematu i nie zajmują wiele miejsca. Science fiction jest tutaj językiem wypowiedzi na temat człowieka, jego ograniczeń i ich implikacji. Pokazuje naszą niegotowość na spotkane z czymś, co wykracza poza nasze pojęcia. Wszystko to napisano sprawnym, klarownym językiem (choć momentami widać upływ czasu i naturalną ewolucję polszczyzny) i podano w dobrze skonstruowanej fabularnie formie.

Solaris jest zdecydowanie powieścią nie tylko dla koneserów fantastyki naukowej. Książka nie przytłacza specyfiką gatunku i pozwala skupić się na wyżej wymienionych treściach. Zdecydowanie cieszy, że została dostrzeżona i doceniona nie tylko w kraju, ale i za granicą.

The next book to be discussed in the club hosted by @krolestwo is Solaris by Stanisław Lem. It is a science fiction novel that was first published in Polish in 1961, and later reprinted many times and translated into many languages. The book has also had at least two film adaptations: a Soviet one, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, and an American one, starring George Clooney.

Context

The novel was written about fifteen years after World War II had ended. Poland had become a part of the Soviet sphere of influence and was rules by Communists. In 1956, there was destalinisation and a thaw. Artists and authors gained more freedom, but censorship was still a thing. Censors, however, did not treat science fiction so seriously, so writing this genre would allow an author to fly under their radar. See e.g. a review of Wojciech Orliński's book Lem w PRL-u (my own translation):

Wojciech Orliński point to the fact that with his 1958 novel Eden, Lem proved that the censors in the People's Republic of Poland could allow a description of a dictatorship, gulags, or censorship, as long as the plot is set on a different planet and the characters are aliens or robots.

It is also worth placing Solaris in the context of space exploration. Lem wrote the novel after Sputnik 1 and Laika were put on the orbit (1957), but he finished it before Gagarin's flight (1961). No planet outside of the Solar System was known at the time, before the first confirmation of their existence took place in 1992.

Plot and structure

The narrator and protagonist of the novel is Dr Kris Kelvin—an astronaut and psychologist. We meet him upon his arrival on the eponymous planet. From that moment on, he leads the narrative on two levels: he presents the history of the exploration of Solaris and also tells of the weird events in the research station that he is part of.

Solaris is an unusual object. It orbits a binary star system. Such systems are very unstable and short-lived because such planet is either ejected into space or collides with one of the stars. Yet, Solaris has a factor that stabilises its orbit a mysterious ocean that takes nearly all its surface.

The ocean has been observed to show characteristics of a living organism and even of a sapient life form. The only inhabitant of Solaris is able to create various structures, and even copies of humans. Researchers have formulated numerous hypotheses about it and made numerous attempts at establishing contact, yet to no avail. As experienced by Kelvin and his companions, it can read the content of human minds. Nonetheless, its intentions, however a mystery.

As far as plot structure is concerned, it is somewhat reminiscent of classic solutions as seen in The Aeneid or Adam Mickiewicz's Pan Tadeusz. The protagonists arrives to the place where the plot is set, which is followed by a retrospective explaining previous story, and then the narrative follows until its end. I do not think it is intentional imitation, but I see it rather as a result of the author's reflection on how to put the content into a logical framework.

Themes

The basic theme that I see in the novel is the limits to human cognition. Humans expect to meet beings similar to themselves or at least fitting our preconceptions. What is more, we project our own good features onto the unknown aliens. Still, the history of the research on Solaris, including Kelvin's story, show our unpreparedness for an encounter with something as different from ourselves as the ocean.

Moreover, the above mentioned limits do not pertain exclusively to external matters, but also oneself. At some point, the crew decide to transmit a signal based on Kelvin's recorded brainwaves to the ocean. Despite his consent, he is afraid of what it might contain because we do not know what lies in the unconscious, which is a large portion of our mind.

The novel also illustrates the human tendency to follow delusions, even though they have been proven to be false. I mean the story of Kelvin and Harey (a.k.a. Rheia). Kelvin knows she is just a simulacrum, but he has grown attached to her and mourns her departure.

The story of the study of Solaris also provides an interesting insight into the scientific process. It demonstrates that it is not a simple incremental growth, but rather wandering around a labyrinth of hypotheses that require verification. Some of them turn out to be blind alleys. In the case of the ocean, such attempts fail, so it remains an unsolved mystery.

Technology and babble

What strikes while reading Solaris 60 years after its premiere, is that it mentions outdated technologies. The station is equipped with valve radios, which were soon replaced by transistor ones. There are also paper books. Though I do not think that book as such will become obsolete, a serious collection has its mass. Current space launches aim at minimising the mass and the volume of equipment sent into space, and in the case of a mission to a planet with a toxic atmosphere (such as Solaris), the ground crew would definitely prioritise all devices and supplies that would ensure the astronauts' survival.

At some point, the novel narrates a search for a lost researcher who explored planed in some flying machine. I noticed that there is no mention of any geolocation technology. Not even a relatively simple emitter. This is interesting in the context of the role of radio and radar in times when Lem was writing the book.

As regards nonexistent technology, I noticed the gravitron gravitational field generator based on a nuclear reactor. The issue of gravity on spaceships is a recurring motif in possibly all works of science fiction concerning space travel, but it still seems that Earth's scientists do not have any idea how it could work.

There is also some babble on the nature of the simulacra and the way to get rid of them. It is another indispensable feature of the genre that makes science fiction fiction. Lem took advantage that neutrinos are relatively unknown, and about 1960, they would basically be a total mystery for the majority of his audience.

Summary

Such technological matters, however, are secondary to the main subject and do not take much space. In this novel, science fiction is an idiom to say something about humans, our limits and the consequences of those limits. The story shows that we are not ready to face something that exceeds our preconceptions. All of this is written in a good, clear language (though at some points you can see that some time has passed since the premiere and that Polish has evolved since then) and served in a well-structured plot.

Solaris is definitely a novel that not only science fiction fans could enjoy. The specific features of the genre do not overwhelm the reader and make it possible to focus on the aforementioned topics. I am happy that the book has been noticed and appreciated on only in Poland, but also abroad.
