My new obsession (Buddhism) has too many facets and it's not very easy to understand its structures, so in the best improvised style, just as I was doing with Freudian psychoanalysis (I haven't forgotten, friends, I just have ADHD and it's so hard to stay on track), I will study in real time here with you the logic behind the main lines of study in Buddhism, like in a jam session or whatever.

From the beginning of my current study, I had decided to delve specifically into Theravada because I consider it to be the most original and true path of Buddhism, as it was the path that Siddhartha himself "prescribed." I confess that even so, not everything pleases me (not everything is about me, Buddha would say), but what I mean by that is that my skeptical heart expected even less metaphysics in this line than I found, and as far as I know, the other lines are even more "religious," which is definitely a problem for me, but let's find out together if that's true or not.

Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism

Sources differ, but it appears that Siddhartha Gautama "composed" Buddhism about 2,500 years ago in India. One thing (or rather two, or rather 12 things) is shared across all branches of Buddhism—the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path—but over the centuries, different philosophical interpretations and meditative practices have led to the creation of different "schools" of this doctrine. The three main currents are Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Each has its own path to the same ultimate goal: liberation from suffering (Nirvana).

Even after Buddha's (Siddhartha's) death, his followers (known as Sangha - the community) continued to maintain the oral teachings for a long period, but at some point in history it was decided (thankfully) that these teachings should be written down, and so all the knowledge was compiled in the "Tripitaka." However, less than a hundred years after Buddha's death, significant disagreements began to arise. What caused the most debate initially were the supposed "monastic rules" and the nature of enlightenment. Then we had two movements, the School of the Elders (Sthavira Nikaya), conservative and literal about Buddha's teachings, and the Great Community (Mahāsāṃghika), which tended toward flexibility and inclusion (hmm, that smells like progressivism). This School of Elders became what we now call Theravada, that is, the line closest to the original and exact teachings of what Buddha said (which is exactly my area of study), while the other progressive group (I hope you don't mind my joke) became, centuries later, the Mahayana school, which continued to reinterpret the teachings.

Theravada: The Way of the Elders

Recorded in the Pali Canon, Theravada is the oldest school of Buddhism. This canon is basically the most complete collection of Buddha's discourses that exists. It spread from India to Sri Lanka, where it was written down from oral traditions (imagine having a photographic memory to transmit a pack of information as large as the Pali). Theravada is predominant in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka (look at that! And I thought it was mainly strong in Japan). In Theravada philosophy, an individual who has attained Nirvana is called an Arhat (not a Buddha, imagine that), and this enlightened being is free from the cycle of rebirth (what a dream, huh?), which is called Samsara. Unlike other schools, the focus here is on self-liberation through personal effort, discipline, and meditation. In this line, Buddha is a human who has attained enlightenment, but not as a divine entity to be worshipped, and this is very important.

Theravada focuses mainly on the Pali Canon (Tripitaka), which can be summarized as follows: rules for monastic life, Buddha's discourses, and philosophical and psychological analyses. The monastic question is of paramount importance (and this is a point that I find negative, because it seems paradoxical to the teaching that it is possible to achieve enlightenment alone, as Buddha did), but in addition, Theravada focuses on Vipassana meditation, as well as the main concepts expressed in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

Mahayana: The Great Vehicle

Okay, let's try to remain unbiased when talking about a line of thought that I don't agree with. Mahayana, or "Great Vehicle," emerged around the 1st century BC in India as a movement that sought to make the Buddhist path more accessible and compassionate. One of the main differences is the inclusion of a vast collection of new texts to the content of the Pali Canon, called Mahayana Sutras. Although it also began in India, it spread to China, Tibet, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, giving rise to several other schools such as Zen, Pure Land, and Nichiren. But let's get to the point: for Mahayana, there is no such ideal as Arhat. The quest is for Bodhisattva, an enlightened being who, out of unwavering compassion, postpones his own entry into Nirvana to focus on helping all other beings achieve the same enlightenment (sounds pretty nice and benevolent, huh?). Mahayana philosophy has the concept of emptiness (Shunyata) and that all events and phenomena are devoid of inherent and independent existence, in addition to the concept that all beings have the innate potential to become Buddhas (and isn't this also true in Theravada?

I always thought so). For Mahayana, it is important to study the Sutras (the Lotus, Heart, and Diamond Sutras), but here it starts to get complicated: for this school of thought, there is not only the earthly Buddha (or Buddhas), but also the cosmic Buddhas (Sambhogakaya) and the absolute principle of Buddhahood (Dharmakaya), which I simply do not know exactly what it means. In this line, in addition to meditation, practitioners have mantra recitations, a rigorous discipline of devotion to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the cultivation of the "six perfections." Although I am very sympathetic to Zen, I cannot help but have a certain prejudice against such a severe change in relation to the original words of the Buddha. The idea that "there is no self, no one is special, everyone can attain enlightenment, and there are no gods" has been clearly corrupted into a concept where practitioners recite mantras for hours, devote themselves to specific figures, and ask for help. How could they have changed the original concept so much?

Vajrayana: The Diamond Vehicle

And then we have Vajrayana, also known as Tantric Buddhism or Mantrayana, which I confess I don't even know, totally new to me even though the term "Tantra" is famous. It is often considered a branch of Mahayana, although it is distinct enough to be classified as a third vehicle. Like the other lines, it emerged in India around the 5th century AD (do you notice the time difference?) and became firmly established in Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, and parts of Japan. It is based entirely on Mahayana philosophy (oh dear, it lost points in my research), but promises to have a unique and powerful set of techniques to accelerate the path to enlightenment. Apparently, they share the concepts of Bodhisattva but "promise" or rather offer a "way" to achieve Buddhahood in a single lifetime (wow!), its philosophical basis is purity and enlightenment that must be recognized as already existing and not something to be achieved in the future, in other words, it has more to do with identifying with your Buddha nature than becoming a Buddha. In addition to using the foundations of Theravada and Mahayana, Vajrayana adds the Tantra scriptures, is highly esoteric, and follows a somewhat hermetic pattern (requiring direct transmission from master to disciple), and man, this one lost me completely, it's basically everything I don't want in a philosophy of life (making it clear that I don't even consider pure Buddhism as a religion). Vajrayana uses "deity visualizations," mantras, mandalas, energy practices, and other things.

PERSONAL CONCLUSION

My conclusion at the end of the day is the same as I already had. Theravada continues to be the philosophical path that transcends the false impression of religion precisely because it is based on disciplines and precepts focused mainly on immediate reality, on the observable world, despite touching on metaphysical subjects (which I have not yet studied). Siddartha personally underwent a very serious process of self-improvement and what we call enlightenment, from which his teachings have endured for more than 2,500 years (some say more than 3,000 years, in fact), Most of his discourses were based on suggestions of harmony and attunement to the experience of being alive, improving existence to the point of transcending one's own limits, rejecting the complex and heavy metaphysics that permeated his country of origin (India) and, to this day, rejecting all the dense and claustrophobic theism suggested by both Western and Eastern religions. All other schools of Buddhism seem to have lost themselves in reverie and added content from who knows where that was not passed down by Buddha, stipulating rules that are much more "religious" and metaphysical, esoteric to something that was inherently tangible and objective. I respect those who have found themselves on these other paths, but unfortunately, that didn't work for me. And even Theravada itself will not work for me as a single official line, but undoubtedly 90% of what it proposes will be of intense benefit to my existence, and I have already been striving to try to implement it in my daily life.

Minha nova obsessão (O Budismo) tem facetas demais e não é muito fácil compreender suas estruturas, então no melhor estilo improvisado tal como eu vinha fazendo com a psicanálise Freudiana (não esqueci, amigos, apenas tenho TDAH mesmo e é tão difícil se manter na linha), irei estudar em tempo real aqui com vocês a lógica por trás das principais linhas de estudo do Budismo, como numa Jam session ou sei lá o que.

Desde o começo desse meu atual estudo eu havia decidido por me aprofundar especificamente no Theravada por considerar que é o caminho mais original e verdadeiro do budismo, por ter sido o caminho que o próprio Siddharta "prescreveu", confesso que ainda assim, nem tudo me agrada (nem tudo é sobre mim, diria Buda), mas o que quero dizer com isso é que meu coração cético esperava ainda mais ausência de metafísica nessa linha do que eu encontrei, e até onde eu sei, as outras linhas são mais "religiosas" ainda, o que definitivamente é um problema pra mim, mas, vamos junto descobrir se isso é verdade ou não.

Budismo Theravada, Mahayana e Vajrayana ---------------------------------------

As fontes divergem, mas ao que tudo indica, o indivíduo Siddhartha Gautama "compôs" o Budismo há mais ou menos 2.500 anos na Índia. Uma coisa (ou melhor duas, ou melhor 12 coisas) são compartilhadas em todas as linhas do budismo — As Quatro Nobres Verdades e o Nobre Caminho Óctuplo —, porém ao longo dos séculos, diferentes interpretações filosóficas e práticas meditativas acabaram por criar diferentes "escolas" dessa doutrina. As três principais correntes são o Theravada, o Mahayana e o Vajrayana. Cada uma tem seu próprio caminho para o mesmo objetivo final: a libertação do sofrimento (Nirvana).

Mesmo após a morte de Buda (Siddharta), seus seguidores (o que é chamado de Sangha - a comunidade) seguiu mantendo os ensinamentos orais por um longo período, mas em algum momento da história foi decidido (ainda bem) que tais ensinamentos deveriam ser escritos e então todo o conhecimento doi compilado no "Tripitaka", mas não deu-se nem cem anos após a morte de Buda e já comecaram algumas discordâncias significativas. E o que mais causou debate inicialmente foram as supostas "regras monásticas" e a natureza da iluminação. Aí tivemos então dois movimentos, a Escola dos Anciões (Sthavira Nikaya), conservadora e literal sobre os ensinamentos de Buda e a Grande Comunidade (Mahāsāṃghika) que tendia para a flexibilidade e inclusão (humm, isso cheira a progressismo). Essa Escola dos Anciões tornou-se o que chamamos hoje de Theravada, ou seja, a linha mais próxima aos ensinamentos originais e exatos do que Buda falou (que é exatamente a minha área de estudo), já o outro grupo progressista (espero que não critiquem minha brincadeira) tornou-se séculos depois a escola Mayahana que seguiu reinterpretando os ensinamentos.

### Theravada: A Via dos Anciãos

Registrada no Cânone Pali, o Theravada é a escola mais antiga do Budismo, esse cânone é basicamento a coleção mais completa que existe dos discursos do Buda. Espalhou-se da Índia para o Sri Lanka onde foi escrita a partir das tradições orais (aja memória fotográfica para transmitir um pack de informações tão grande quanto o Pali). O Theravada é predominante na Tailândia, Camboja, Laos, Mianmar e Sri Lanka (olha só! E eu que imaginava que era algo fortíssimo no Japão principalmente). Na filosofia do Theravada, o indivíduo que alcançou o Nirvana é chamado de Arhat (e não de Buda, vejam só), esse iluminado está livre do ciclo do renascimento (que sonho ein), tal ciclo se chama Samsara. Diferente das outras linhas, o foco aqui é a autolibertação através do esforço pessoal, disciplina e meditação. Nessa linha Buda é um humano que alcançou a iluminação mas não como uma entidade divina a ser adorada e isso é muito importante.

O Theravada está focado principalmente no Cânone Pali (Tripitaka) que em resumo divide-se em: regras para a vida monástica, discursos de Buda e análises filosóficas e psicológicas. A questão monástica tem suma importância (e isso é um ponto que pra mim acaba sendo negativo, por que parece paradoxal ao ensinamento de que é possível alcançar a iluminação sozinho, tal qual Buda fez), mas além disso o Theravada foca-se na meditação Vipassana, além dos conceitos principais expressos nas quatro nobres verdades e no caminho óctuplo.

### Mahayana: O Grande Veículo

Ok, vamos tentar manter se isento de preconceito ao falar de uma linha da qual eu não compactuo. O Mahayana, ou "Grande Veículo", surgiu por volta do século I a.C. na Índia como um movimento que buscava tornar o caminho budista mais acessível e compassivo. Uma das principais diferenças está na inclusão de uma vasta coleção de novos textos ao conteúdo do Cânone Pali, chamados de Sutras Mahayana, apesar de ter iniciado também na Índia, espalhou-se pela China, Tibete, Japão, Coreia e Vietnã e por consequência dando origem a várias outras escolas como o Zen, o Terra Pura e o Nichiren. Mas vamos ao que interessa, para o Mahayana não existe esse ideal de Arhat, a busca é pelo Bodhisattva, um ser iluminado que por uma compaixão inabalável adia sua própria entrada no Nirvana para focar em ajudar todos os outros seres a alcançarem a mesma iluminação (parece algo bem bonito e benevolente, ein?). A filosofia do Mahayana possui o conceito do vazio (Shunyata) e de que todos os eventos e fenômenos são desprovídos de uma existência inerente e independente, além do conceito de que todos os seres possuem o potencial inato para se tornarem Buda (e isso não é assim no Theravada? Sempre achei que sim). Para o Mahayana existe uma importância em estudar os Sutras (o do Lótus, do Coração e do Diamante), porém aqui começa a ficar complicado: Para essa linha não só existe o Buda terrestre (ou os Budas), mas também os Budas cósmicos (Sambhogakaya) e o princípio absoluta da budeidade (Dharmakaya), que eu simplesmente não sei exatamente o que significa e nessa linha além das meditações, os praticantes tem as recitações de mantras, uma disciplina rigorosa de devoção a Budas e Bodhisattvas e o cultivo das "seis perfeições", apesar de eu simpatizar muito com o Zen, não consigo não ter certo preconceito por uma mudança tão severa em relação as palavras originais do Buda. A ideia de que "não existe eu, ninguém é especial, todos podem alcançar a iluminação e não existem deuses" foi nitidamente corrompida para um conceito onde os praticantes recitam mantras por horas, devotam-se para figuras específicas e pedem pela ajuda. Como podem ter modificado tanto o conceito original?

### Vajrayana: O Veículo de Diamante

E temos então o Vajrayana, também conhecido como Budismo Tântrico ou Mantrayana, qu econfesso nem conhecer, totalmente novo pra mim apesar de que o termo "Tantra" é famoso. Ele é frequentemente considerado um ramo do Mahayana, embora seja distinto o suficiente para ser classificado como um terceiro veículo. Tal como as outras linhas, surgiu na Índia por volta do século V d.C. (percebem a diferença de tempo?) e se estabeleceu firmemente no Tibete, Butão, Mongólia e partes do Japão. Ele se baseia inteiramente na filosofia Mahayana (poxa, perdeu pontos na minha pesquisa), mas promete ter um conjunto único e poderoso de técnicas para acelerar o caminho para a iluminação. Ao que tudo indica, compatilham dos conceitos de Bodhisattva mas "promete" ou melhor dizer, oferece um "jeito" de alcançar o estado de Buda em uma única vida (uou!), sua base filosófica é a pureza e a iluminação que deve ser reconhecida como já existente e não algo a ser alcançado no futuro, em outras palavras, tem mais a ver com identificar-se com sua natureza Búdica do que tornar-se Buda. Além de utilizar-se das bases do Theravada e do Mahayana, o Vajrayana adiciona as escrituras do Tantra, é altamente esotérico e segue um padrão meio hermético (necessidade de transmissão direta de mestre para discípulo), e poxa, esse me perdeu total, é basicamente tudo que eu não quero para uma filosofia de vida (já deixando claro que nem considero o Budismo puro como religião). O Vajrayana utiliza-se de "visualizações de Deidades", Mantras, Mandalas, Práticas energéticas e outras coisas.

CONCLUSÃO PESSOAL

A minha conclusão no final das contas é a mesma que eu já tinha. Theravada segue sendo o caminho filosófico que transcende a falsa impressão de religião exatamente por que baseia-se em disciplinas e preceitos focados principalmente na realidade imediata, no mundo observável, apesar de esbarrar sim em assuntos metafísicos (que eu ainda não cheguei a estudar). Siddartha passou pessoalmente por um processo seríssimo de auto aperfeiçoamento e disso que chamamos de iluminação, do qual seus ensinamentos perduram por mais de 2 mil e quinhentos anos (há quem diga mais de três mil anos, inclusive), a maioria dos seus discursos apoiavam-se em sugestões de uma harmonia e afinação da experiência de estar vivo, aprimorando a existência a ponto de transcender os próprios limites, negando metafísicas complexas e carregadas que permeavam seu país de origem (a Índia) e até hoje negando todo o teísmo denso e claustrofóbico sugerido pelas religiões tanto ocidentais quanto orientais. Todas as outras escolas de Budismo parecem ter se perdido no devaneio e acrescentado sabe-se lá de onde, conteúdos que não foram passados por Buda, estipulando regras muito mais "religiosas" e metafísicas, esotéricas a algo que era inerentemente palpável e objetivo. Respeito quem se encontrou nesses outros caminhos, mas infelizmente isso daí não funcionou pra mim. E inclusive o próprio Theravada não funcionará para mim como uma linha única oficial, mas sem dúvidas 90% do que ela se propõe será de intenso proveito para minha existência e eu já tenho me esforçado para tentar implementar no meu dia a dia.
