Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Colors Made Easy!

In the first week of my painting class we covered the colors and were required to paint a color wheel. A color wheel is set up in a very specific manner and is very helpful for those just beginning with mixing colors. The color wheel is made up of Primary colors, Secondary colors, and Tertiary colors.

Primary colors

The primary colors are the three colors which, theoretically, can be mixed in different proportion in order to achieve all the rest of the visible colors. These three colors are Yellow, Blue, and Red. These colors are set up in a triad diagonally from one another.

Secondary Colors

The secondary colors are the next three colors which are generated from mixing the three primary colors in pairs.

Red plus Blue gives you Violet.
Yellow plus Red gives you Orange.
Blue plus Yellow gives you Green.

These colors can also be found as a triad diagonally from one another on the color wheel. Each of these colors is separated from a primary color by one space in either direction.

Tertiary colors

The tertiary colors are created by mixing the primary colors and secondary colors.

Red plus Orange gives you Red-Orange.
Red plus Violet gives you Red-Violet.
Blue plus Violet gives you Blue-Violet.
Blue plus Green gives you Blue-Green.
Yellow plus Green gives you Yellow-Green.
Yellow plus Orange gives you Yellow-Orange.

These colors can be found in the spaces separating the secondary colors and primary colors.

Now that you have learned a thing or two about color, just wait until I teach about how color isn't inherent in any object!
