Working on a new piece: The Tree

Initial layers for a new Painting

Normally I am very much a planner when I work on larger more involved pieces. A few sketches become ink and watercolour studies and then even after I begin laying down layers, I still might add or tweek it here.

This piece can't decide where it wants to be.

Sometimes I paint a thing that seems like a recalled dream. Who knows what got in there to spur it on, a chat with someone, a film, maybe a book, or just a dream...but, it gets in there none the less.

Sometimes I feel the mind of the artist can see into the past and future.

And I could see this easily being a remembered past centuries ago as well as a glimpse of my post Singularity world, with gears and and a bit of a glowing light. It hasn't told me yet.

I used to let my artwork have more free life, like spoilt children.

I'd let them meander and charge into my subconscious willy nilly, throwing things about and demanding to be made in this way or that, no rhyme or reason.

I learned a long time ago that art must be tamed sometimes and given time outs and rules and lessons to behave.

That is why I try to maintain a few styles but with some self inflicted rules to those places. Otherwise I found myself making things that would be so random and disconnected, gallery collections seemed impossible with the chaotic nature of this or that.

But, every so often, one dotes on a child. Perhaps they have given you 'the look' and you end up giving them sweets and allowing them free reign to faff about instead of getting down to business and towing the like and following the rules.

This piece is that spoilt child.

What shall it be? Who can say. Sometimes spoiled children simply never learn and are relegating to the dark shadow from which they stepped, like the ghost of a forgotten ancestor no one bothers to recall enough to aide them in their haunting.

One must humour an introverted child-less artist who gives far too much life to her scribbles.

In other's it might be called odd or madness, in artist's we call it "eccentricity".

So, I hope that if you are an artist, today you make your 'children' mind and do as they are told. Otherwise, who knows what toppled mess you might find yourselves in.
