[CR] Last Terracotta Artisans: Mr. Ngữ

Artwork ImageHi Everyone ❤

Today I would like to share another drawing that I made for the Thanh Ha Terracotta Park and Museum, which is located in Hoi An in the Quang Ham province in Vietnam. This is a 500 year old city and living history. My drawings form part of the of a documentary film project that is being produced by the Museum to raise awareness of the craft and culture in the terracotta village in Hoi Anh. Today, I will introduce you to Mr. Ngữ.

We came to his home, which is also his workplace, to interview Mr. Ngữ. We also wanted to capture him during his work. He shared with us some of his deep thoughts on his career to which he has dedicated his whole life.

”This job is hereditary from father to son, we have worked day by day and gain experience gradually. For example, when I hold a piece of land, I can know that land is good or bad, or it can be done or not absolutely by experience, and making it usable land also requires personal experience.”

”The speciality of this career is [that all our products are] hand-made but all products must be the same, and we have created our products in a way that makes them desirable for our buyers, that is very important. This career is hard work and earns less money compared to other jobs, so our descendant want to find other comfortable careers to pursue. None of the youth in the village care about the career and craft that the family has been working on for generations. So it's difficult for us to develop this career and tradition to leave for our descendants.”

I watched him completing the last part of finishing the pot he was working on. He’s checking his work and making sure the pot is round and smooth.

And here is his portrait that I drew in the scribble style.
