Continuing my holiday posts while holidaying in Malaga - Bendalmadena...
The apartments in Benalmadena.
On the ground level of the apartment blocks are shops, cafes, restaurants and mini-supermarket or convenience shops. So, one does not have to walk far for basic necessities. All very convenient.
The Unicorn is such a restaurant nearby. It is run by a British couple, Jan and Alan who retired here 18 years ago. Very nice and friendly couple, and very witty. They have a simple menu, serving simple British food fare, so there’s no heavy cooking. But I am not fussy. Simple food fare is good enough for me who eats to live.

There are many such restaurants here – both local and European, that cater to the foreigners living here. Their prices are usually more reasonable than those who caters to the tourists.. The foreigners will usually patronize the restaurants from home. The Unicorn’s clientele are mostly from the UK. It is a source of contact for the foreigners for information, and to connect with compatriots. Generally, they have a very good relationship with the owners.
The restaurant business here is very competitive. Therefore, they are not never very busy. I guess they make enough to survive, but I doubt they make good money. The Unicorn is lucky in that they have quite a few regulars and a fair few returning customers.
I eat here once, sometimes, twice a week because it is near my apartment, and the owners are nice, friendly and witty. And they speak English – of course. It is also very pleasant to sit out in the square in the early evenings and have a drink or two before/after dinner, people-watch, and hear the birds feed.
