Hola amigos, es increíble que ya haya pasado un año desde aquel terrible suceso que causó tanto dolor en la ciudad de Pinar del Río, estoy hablando del huracán Ian, el cual pasó en la madrugada del día 27 de septiembre. Recuerdo que estuvimos muchos días sin corriente y cuando pude volver al trabajo me encontré la universidad en muy malas condiciones, muchos ventanales y puertas destrozadas, así como escombros por todas partes.
En esta ocasión, y a un año y unos días de este evento, quiero mostrarles en qué condiciones se encuentra la universidad hoy, específicamente la sede Mendive que es donde trabajo y es donde se estudian las carreras pedagógicas. Hello friends, it is incredible that it has already been a year since that terrible event that caused so much pain in the city of Pinar del Rio, I am talking about hurricane Ian, which passed in the early morning of September 27. I remember that we were many days without power and when I was able to return to work I found the university in very bad conditions, many windows and doors shattered, as well as debris everywhere.
On this occasion, and a year and a few days after this event, I want to show you in what conditions the university is today, specifically the Mendive campus, where I work and where the pedagogical careers are studied. La verdad es que se ha avanzado mucho desde entonces pero aún quedan cosas por hacer. Como punto a favor, puedo decir que los entornos de la universidad ya están tan limpios como siempre y los árboles tienen su verdor característico. También se han arreglado las puertas y ventanas de muchos locales.
The truth is that much progress has been made since then, but there are still things to do. As a point in favor, I can say that the surroundings of the university are as clean as ever and the trees have their characteristic greenery. The doors and windows of many premises have also been fixed.
Por otra parte, mi departamento radica en la cuarta y última planta y esto no es bueno para nosotros, ya que el huracán se llevó el papel de techo y aún no se ha remplazado, lo que implica que cada vez que llueve todas las aulas de la cuarta planta se llenan de agua debido a la filtración. En estos días que estuvo lloviendo fue un desastre, la auxiliar de limpieza tenía que estar sacando el agua de todas las aulas, pero es ella sola trabajando así que hasta yo tuve que tomar el haragán y sacar agua para poder dar mi clase.
On the other hand, my department is on the fourth and last floor and this is not good for us, since the hurricane took away the roof paper and it has not been replaced yet, which means that every time it rains all the classrooms on the fourth floor fill up with water due to the leakage. These days that it was raining it was a disaster, the cleaning assistant had to be removing the water from all the classrooms, but she is working alone so even I had to help get the water out so as to be able to teach my class.
En cuanto a las ventanas, muchas de ellas ya han sido remplazadas por nuevas en toda la institución, sobre todo se ha priorizado la parte de la beca. Pero lamentablemente aún quedan muchas aulas que están al descubierto en gran parte y muchas de ellas están en la cuarta planta.
As for the windows, many of them have already been replaced with new ones throughout the institution, especially the scholarship part has been prioritized. But unfortunately there are still many classrooms that are largely uncovered and many of them are on the fourth floor.
En resumen amigos, se ha avanzado bastante, pero creo que se debe hacer más. No es posible que después de un año tanto profesores como estudiantes estemos realizando nuestra labor bajo estas condiciones. Se debería dar más prioridad a arreglar este tipo de instituciones, dónde se forma el futuro del país. Ya es un deber de los dirigentes prestar mayor atención a este problema, mientras tantos nosotros, desde nuestra posición, hacemos lo que podemos por mantener limpia y hermosa a nuestra universidad.
In summary, friends, we have made a lot of progress, but I believe that more needs to be done. It is not possible that after a year both teachers and students are doing our work under these conditions. More priority should be given to fix this type of institutions, where the future of the country is formed. It is already a duty of the leaders to pay more attention to this problem, while we, from our position, do what we can to keep our university clean and beautiful.
