Sandwich Memories in the Big Blue House

Hello, Hive land :)

How's life today? I hope you are fabulous and kicking :)

I was reading the Blog of the Month prompt two evenings ago and my childhood memories readily popped up. I started tapping my keyboard as images of many yesteryears flashed in the forefront of my mind like it was only yesterday.

The trip down the memory lane took me back over 3 decades ago to our old house somewhere closer to the valley, the big blue house as it was commonly referred to by other people those days because it was painted blue. (I was scouring my archives for a photo of it, unfortunately I couldn't find any.)

20 yards away from the house or was it 30? I am not sure, mom had a rhubarb mini-garden. She had about 10 plots of them. If there was one that mother cooks amazingly well, it was rhubarb jam and once she started cooking them, the whole house and the yard would smell like rhubarb, lol! Which was of course exciting for us because we knew what we'd enjoy afterwards.

And what was that?

You've probably guessed it already and you are right :)

I can't find a copyright-free rhubarb jam photo but it looks like this, only darker.

We enjoyed a lot of rhubarb sandwiches those years and nothing else. Oh not really! We also had other bread spread back then, the mulberry jams.

We had a mulberry tree which was as tall as our house, growing 5 yards from my sister's bedroom window and had plenty of fruits. I think it was still there until the year 2000 but was removed after it was damaged by a storm. Anyways, JC my second elder sister was the bravest one who used to climb up and down the tree to pick the ripe fruits that she or mom would make into jams. And course we loved to spread on fluffy pancakes, loaves, biscuits and top over mashed sweet potatoes even.

And there was one more. Avocado sandwich! I remember that the market day during those years was a Thursday and our parents used to go together and avocado was amongst the fruits they loved to bring home when they're in season. We'd wait for a day or two when the avocados are fully ripe and we would mash them, add some sugar and like the jams, we'd spread them not only on loaves or pancakes but just about anything.

Yum yum! Just thinking about our fun those good ole days made me feel nostalgic and really hungry!

Then time went by and we grew a lot older, mom lost her rhubarbs, they moved to another place and our tastes changed too. But what remained over the years is our enjoyment of simple and non-fancy homemade sandwiches. In recent years, we usually just have eggs & mayonnaise between our loaves (or bun) or some cheese and ham strips.

But I must admit that while writing this, I had a wishful thinking to once again have a taste of those rhubarb and mulberry jams we used to enjoy and love back then. Yet I know I can only relive those years in my heart, then I can smile or giggle and yes, feel grateful too that they still exist in my memory and I get to draw them out from time to time just like today.

Thank you for reading me and yes, this is my entry to the April BOM challenge. Please check it out and send in yours too :)
