Halloween will be celebrated tomorrow, 31 October; commemorating the end of summer and the harvest season in America and European countries.
According to legend, the boundaries between the living and the spirit world cross on this night, allowing the souls of the departed, to enter the living world.
Scary outrageous costumes and burning jack o’lantern pumpkins play a big part in this ancient feast, in an attempt to chase the mischievous spirits back to where they belong!
This spooky fun celebration only became popular in SA around a decade ago as the influence of American horror movies made it popular with our younger generation, but trick and treating mainly happens in community centres or secure estates because of our high crime rate, sad to say!
SO, being a #silverblogger, Halloween was never big here in South Africa in my younger days, but I do have a couple of Hive Halloween-themed food blogging memories to share for this week's #BoW; sadly no pics of being dressed up in outrageous costumes and letting my hair down, which is the main reason why this holiday is so popular in many parts of the word; a time to be crazy and have fun!
Exactly a year ago I made, or rather used kitchen trickery for @qurator's Hive Top Chef Contest by painting store-bought marshmallows to make these ghoulish popsicle treats stuck into the head of a friendly jack o'lantern.
They even had coloured hair which the kids enjoyed eating, as awful as that may sound!
On another occasion some four years ago for a sandwich contest run by @jaybird, I made this awful looking Gory Grisly Hot Dog Platter that my family ate with long teeth and I don't blame them for not wanting to tuck into this awful platter at all!
These were the ingredients used for the hot dogs: bloody tomato sauce, vienna sausages with small yellow tomatoes cut in half to make up the nails.
A couple of smiling apple lips with teeth made of small marshmallows stuck down with peanut butter.
Fingers made with dried fruit lollies and almonds as nails, plus a red apple heart swimming in bloody tomato sauce.
SO...guys and dolls from the #silverbloggers community, I hope this has at least inspired you to make some easy treats for your family and friends tomorrow, but I look forward to seeing your outrageous costumes for this week's Silver Bloggers #BoW Halloween Memories.
