Growth takes place when there is struggle, and struggle is part of the process of becoming stronger. This is true for someone who exercises to break down muscle mass in order to regenerate new and additional muscle mass. This is true for chess players learning a repetoir of games in order to advance through the rankings.

And it's true for caterpillars undergoing metamorphosis to grow into butterflies. The struggle the butterfly endures as it breaks free of its cocoon is what give it strength to use its wings for flight. Without that struggle, the butterfly is grounded.

When Alice Walker's 1982 novel The Color Purple was adapted to a screenplay for the 1985 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey was chosen for the role of Sofia.

The critical acclaim she had received for her performance led to other roles, including a performance in the 1989 television mini-series The Women of Brewster Place.

Oprah Winfrey expanded her presence in television and movies first by forming Harpo Productions, Inc. in 1986, then Harpo Films in 1990. Both Harpo Productions and Harpo Films began buying film rights to literary works. Among the literary works whose film rights had been purchased are Connie May Fowler's Before Women Had Wings in 1997 and Toni Morrison's Beloved in 1998. Oprah starred in both movies, and she also produced Before Women Had Wings.
