Index4INDEX Card 197: Judy Garland 1

Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.

-- Judy Garland

About the Quote

Although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it cannot be done at the expense of being oneself. We're each born with traits which make us unique and individual (even twins, triplets, etc.). We may have things in common with many people, but no one else has the total package of traits we each claim as our own.

We need to develop ourselves to such a degree that people will be flattering us by their imitations of us. We don't want those imitations to reflect some flaw or other failing, so we need to be the best we can be so that the imitations we get ftruly produce flattery.
