World On Fire

Yes, the world is on fire. I don't want to touch on the global warming debate here, that's not what I mean, no literal fire here. But economically, socially and politically, the world is in dire straits...

I've tried to touch on this frightening development in several posts already, but things are getting worse every day, so there's still a need to speak out about this. Since you always have to "follow the money" to really understand what's going on in the world, it should come as no surprise that economy, or the capitalist market economy, lies at the root of almost all problems of human kind. Since capitalism's latest bust cycle in 2008, the world has been set on fire.

Not only in the U.S. but in all western and industrialized countries there has been a strong move toward nationalism and authoritarianism. In all these countries the people lose faith in the democracy that hasn't served them for decades. They see the rich get richer and politicians being payed for by the rich 1%, to ensure that their own selfish needs are being served. This sets the stage for demagogues; everywhere "strong leaders" stand up, mostly on the far right side of the political spectrum, but sometimes also on the far left, that incite hatred and fear toward the weakest members of their society, the poor, the immigrants and / or the religious minorities.

And everywhere they're winning; they present an easy scapegoat for the financial woes of these countries' working classes, often with an equally simple solution. "Build a wall", "send them back to where they came from"... you know the routine. And you all know where this happened before and how this led to the second world war. I'm not exaggerating when I say the world is on fire. I wish I was.

I'm going to shut up now, and let Bernie Sanders do the rest of the talking. It's quite the speech he gave "at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies on about the problem of authoritarian nationalism threatening democratic societies"; it's 40 minutes long, but the man is more eloquent than I could ever hope to become. So please grab a beer, wine or coffee and listen to his cry for help; he illustrates perfectly how this is a global problem and understands the need for us to not give in to the propaganda from the keepers of the status quo.
