Discount or general merchandise stores are usually chain stores with several outlets and they sell a massive number of assorted everyday merchandise at low prices. These products range from household items to groceries, food, toiletries, cosmetics and even electronics items. They have long operating hours and some stores are opened 24 hours. Discount or general merchandise stores are popular among locals and over the years, it grew popular even among tourists. As such, it is common to find notices and product labels in Chinese and English, and you can seek assistance from employees who are bilingual. Some discount or general merchandise stores have tax refund counters for tourists.

Popular discount or general merchandise stores:

  • Don Quijote
  • Ito-Yokado
  • MaxValu
  • Costco

JR Vacation says

  • If you are a night owl, you might want to plan staying nearby a discount or general merchandise store for late night shopping. My personal preference is to stay at Akihabara in Tokyo so that I could shop at the five-storey mega Don Quijote Akihabara store, which closes at 5AM. Likewise, in Osaka, you may want to stay at Shinsaibashi for the 24-hours Don Quijote Dotonbori store; if you are in Hokkaido, you can stay along the Tanukikoji Shopping Street in Sapporo for the 24-hours Don Quijote store.
