Archie Shepp - Jazz saxophonist (born 1937)

What fascinates me so much about the music of Archie Shepp is its very own way of articulating sounds: sometimes they are so shrill and far from all the usual patterns - and then again you can hardly distinguish the different tones from each other as they slide into each other and mix.

The high emotionality in his playing is determined by his involvement in the movement of a new black self-consciousness, in which he pioneered avant-garde and free jazz in the 60's, first on the side of John Coltrane. Despite the cleavage of his lips in the '80s and the associated difficulties in tone formation, he has just produced such groundbreaking pieces as "Mama Rose" and mixes influences from Africa and the early swing era into his own style.

Was mich an der Musik von Archie Shepp so fasziniert ist seine ganz eigene Art der Artikulation von Tönen: mal sind sie so schrill und weit entfernt von all den gewohnten Mustern - und dann wieder kann man kaum die unterschiedlichen Töne voneinander unterscheiden so wie sie ineinander gleiten und sich vermischen.

Die hohe Emotionalität in seinem Spiel ist bestimmt von seinem Engagement in der Bewegung eines neuen schwarzen Selbstbewußtseins, die er als Pionier des Avantgarde- und Free Jazz in den 60'er Jahren zuerst an der Seite von John Coltrane ging. Trotz der Spaltung seiner Lippen in den 80'er Jahren und den damit verbundenen Schwierigkeiten bei der Tonbildung hat er gerade in dieser Zeit so bahnbrechende Stücke wie "Mama Rose" hervorgebracht und mischt Einflüsse aus Afrika und der frühen Swing Era in seinen eigenen Stil.
