Movie Review: Halloween 2018

Hey SteemGouls and Goblins

It's that time of the year again, where parties are themed, women decided to dress up in revealing outfits that parody serious professions, kids get hopped up on candy and shitty movies are released to well ride the hype wave. Expect tons of horror movie marathons on TV and a few new turds to be thrown on the campfire where unexpecting teens who just wanted to party and get laid in the woods, well die for some or other stupid avoidable reason.

So first to put their hand up as a horror flick of the year is one of the most milked franchises in the slasher genre, Halloween. Micheal Myers is back for like the 11th time so babysitters everywhere give up your night jobs because his coming for you.

Plot

The movie starts as two prissy podcasters looking for a payday try to dig up the story of Michael Myers as his being moved to a new prison. It's been 40 years since Laurie Strode survived a vicious attack from crazed killer Michael Myers on Halloween night.

During his transport to a new institution, Myers manages to escape when his bus transfer goes horribly wrong, no one explains why it just does, don't question it, accept it.

Myers now hell-bent on finishing what he started and his keen sense of tracking I don't know from where starts to persue Laurie. She now faces a terrifying showdown when the masked madman returns to Haddonfield. But this time she's ready for him!

My thoughts

Firstly I feel fans and movie geeks who saw this early have been overpraising it and well there whole #metoo vibes going on in here seem to resonate with a large portion of people and who am I to argue? Ride the times man, make bank but don't expect all of us to buy into it.

Jamie Lee does her best with what is given to her, a totally unbelievable, over the top survivalist version of Laurie Strode who should probably be institutionalised with Myers they way she's off her rocker.

The movie takes way to long to get going for well a repeat of what we've seen before with sequences taken from the original and a number sequels to boot! There are also strange moments of comedy that belonged in another movie and just feed into the movies directionless tone. When Michael arrives in Haddonfield, however, the subpar writing and direction really begin to reveal itself and the cherry on top is a lacklustre ending I felt cheated by.

I can't fault the acting with Jamie Lee and Andi Matichak both putting in fantastic performances and you'll hear some blood-curdling screams from them throughout the film.

My rating

The plot offered me nothing, there wasn't much suspense and minimal jump scares to really get me going and the ending was not the pay off worth waiting around for. I will have to give it 6 decapitated babysitter heads out of 10.
