It's hard to believe this evening has come and gone so fast. A week ago already has zipped by. But now that the adrenaline and nerves and excitement and overthinking have subsided, and I've had a chance to go through the videos and footage, I am extremely excited to share this experience with you.
@JasperDick and I had our very 1st paid Gig together (my very 1st one ever!!) at The Cottage Club in Fishhoek, hosted by the charismatic and legendary Bill Knight. I cannot describe to you the absolutely mindblowingly cool feeling of actually earning cold hard cash for simply fulfilling my dream of sharing my music with such an incredible audience. The feeling and experience of watching people laugh, cry and even dance a little - moved by the music we were making - was just beyond magic. That, on it's own, is worth every night spent practicing and every panic attack leading up to the show (including a nice big fat one that happened at the venue, just before going on stage).
@Jasper Dick has been the most incredibly supportive mentor, and aside from literally being my oldest friend (since 1989) he is also my greatest inspiration. A phenomenal songwriter and such an engaging performer, I am unfathomably grateful that he has been so willing to guide me and even share the stage with me (even when I miss a cue, or get up on stage at the wrong time 🤣🙈).
This evening, and the ones leading up to it as well as the ones to follow are and will be constant reminders that connection and not perfection is what makes live performance so special.
People don't pay money to watch you record in a studio. They come out and pay good money to see you. In the flesh. With all your imperfections. They want a relatable human being who is willing to completely open up and share their soul, and it is an absolute dream come true for me to be able to fulfill that.
Every time we get up there, we just get better and better and I am so proud of how naturally we perform together and drive crowd engagement. I look forward to being a little less panicky next time, but as many of the greats have said, when you stop being nervous, it doesn't mean anything to you anymore and I don't think that will ever be possible for me. And that is so incredible to look forward to.
