About the Quote
Competition requires adjustments. If we don't adjust to changing conditions, we get left behind, or we fail to advance, or we lose more than just a contest, or it costs us too much in the long run. It's one reason economic monopolies are disliked by consumers and discouraged by nations where free market systems are encouraged.
Competition forces us to analyze what we do. This analysis makes us question our decisions and our methods to determine what works and what doesn't. We stay with what works for us, we discard what doesn't work for us, and we find alternate methods with the expectation that they will work for us.
Even if we're not the leaders or in first place, competition forces us to maintain a certain level of performance. Lack of competition keeps us in place, and frozen in time.
