This is my post for #freewriters 2181 prompt spy hosted by @mariannewest and @daily.prompt
When our kids were small every year the day after school got out we took them camping for a week on one of the islands on our river, no matter the weather, we went. I would have the shopping finished and everything packed and ready to go for 7 people. The only thing we came to land for was to get ice and water from the fish house. There was no electricity and we took no charcoal to cook over, we gathered wood and cooked over the campfire.
One year we got rid of our waterbed and I saved the mattress for the kids to play on in the river, we tied a rope around it and an anchor on the other end of the rope. The kids had a blast playing on it.
After having a fire every day for almost a week
We would dig a hole under where the fire was we would bury a roasting pan, cover it, build a fire on top, and let it cook all day.
when it was time to eat we would dig it up
You could pull the meat apart with your fork, we would also cook dinner rolls over the fire.
On July 1st, 1995 Florida banned net fishing, back then it was the only type of fishing we did, so we went camping. We were all sitting around the campfire one night and a stranger walked up to our camp. In all the years we had camped, we had never had anyone walk into our camp at night.
I thought he was a spy for the Marine Patrol seeing if we had nets hidden and were night fishing with them. He said he was living on a sailboat and saw our fire. To this day I still think he was working for the Marine Patrol.
The only part I did not like was the packing to leave and the unpacking when we got home, as well as all of the wash that needed to be done.
