ULOG 141 - Unplanned expenses from leak inside the walls.

ULOG the log about you!

The leak damages

Got up at 8 am today. I usually wake up at around 9am on Saturday trying to catchup on the lack of sleep of the previous week days but I have a customer coming to pickup some freshly brewed aerated compost tea so I needed to go stop the brewer and fill up the two 20L bottles for him.

David, our neighbour who is also a plumber came around to see the showers. He was surprised that both showers were leaking at the same time.

He first went downstairs to cut off the ceiling and check the extend of the damage and see if we can have any clues on the issue. As you could see it was really bad, see all that mould.

The top side of the ceiling was even worse:

Luckily, nothing else was damaged, there was some stains on the particle board but it wasn't too bad.

We will need to treat the mould on some of the joist though. David went back upstairs and, after switching off the water, started to change all the rubbers from the taps and sealed the shower head. He also sealed off around the pipes with silicone to prevent any water from leaking through. He inspected the tiles and grouts and no cracks and everything seems OK.

We turned the water back on and tried again. The ensuite shower was still leaking like a waterfall, the main shower was dripping a little still. That means we will have to take down walls to access the inside plumbings. David suspect it might be the old welding that might have broken. We will have to see his uncle, another plumber who is equipped with copper welding tools. As the shower tiles were all good, it's best to cut off the walls behind the shower as it will be less expensive to replace a drywall than re-waterproofing and re-tiling the shower walls.

Behind the main shower is the toilet and behind the ensuite is the in-wall cupboard of the guest room, so it's not too bad.

The Maui Xaphoon

Maui Xaphoon

This is my new toy, a Maui Xaphoon. It's a mini saxophone that actually does sound like an actual saxophone if played properly. It seems to be easier to play than the Shakuhachi I bought a while back and which I can't make a proper sound up until now... lol. I'm always attracted to unusual musical instrument but I can't always play them hahaha. This one though seems to be a good candidate for me, I just need more practice to strengthen my lips. Meanwhile, here is a video I found to show you what it sounds like:

The BBQ

We ended our Saturday with yet another BBQ by the Rocket Stove

IMG_8219.JPG

I added some walls around the grill and a roof on top so to keep the heat around the food for a better cooking. After few session on this BBQ we find that putting the coal on an elevated grid makes it burn too efficiently and the heat is too extreme. I will have to rebuild the BBQ and just have the charcoal straight on the bottom bricks, this will slowdown the combustion of the charcoal and reduce heat for a slower cooking but less burned meat.
