All too soon, my holiday has come to an end. This is my tenth week in Benalmadena, and I leave for home tomorrow – back to reality. It has been a lovely ten weeks.
Benalmadena is a town of pensioners and holiday-makers. It is very multinational. The British made up the majority of the foreigners. Then there are the Irish, and the Europeans from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany... There are also Asians, Chinese, Russians, Moroccans... There is a good mix of people of all nationalities here. I didn’t feel that I stood out like a sore thumb. Apart from the tourists, the foreigners either work here, have business here, or are retired here.
Most of the apartments here are holiday homes. They are never fully occupied, so the area is never really busy. The pace here is slow, easy going and relaxing. Folks go about their business quietly. To me, this is a very ideal place to retire.
I feel safe in Benalmadena. I don’t feel threatened, like when in some other cities The locals here are peaceful, law-abiding and friendly people. Unfortunately, there is a language barrier. Most of the older locals don’t speak English, and I don’t speak Spanish.
One of the winning factors is that Benalmadena is very affordable. Imported stuff is expensive, but they have their own local products, and produce, which is only a fraction of the cost of the same stuff that is imported.
The best way to spend some time here – if you are thinking of a couple of weeks to a couple of months, is to rent an apartment here for the duration of your visit. There are plenty of these apartments for rent.
When I first arrived, most of the units in the apartments were not occupied. But as the holidays reached the peak season, the apartments look more lived in. Sometimes, you see tenants who stay for the weekend, and sometimes you see them stay for a week or so. Always people coming and going.
On the ground level of these apartments, there are shops, cafes and restaurants, so one does not have to go too far for the basic daily necessities.
All in all, Benalmadena is an ideal place for holiday, or for retirement – if you are looking for somewhere warm, affordable, and peaceful living.
